Mary Hitchman of Wantage
« on: Tuesday 09 November 21 04:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone!

I‘m looking for the right baptism of my ancestor Mary Hitchman who married William Goddard in Wantage 1821. Are there more information about witnesses ?

Old post -> https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=834333.0

She died in West Ilsley in 1850 age 55. Can someone tell me on what day she died or was buried?

Possible candidates are:

Mary Higgs Hitchman b. 1795 Wantage daughter of Ann

Mary Hitchman b. 1796 daughter of William and Elizabeth

There’s also an Mary Hitchman b. 1800 Wantage daughter of Ann Hitchman maybe the same Ann who had Mary Higgs Hitchman in 1795 maybe she died ?

a Mary Hitchman marries George Hull in Wantage 1816, when did she die?

I just want to find the right Mary Hitchman and don’t want to trace the wrong family and wrong ancestors  :-\

At marriage, they are both of Grove.

The Genealogist only had typed copies of the register, but it does say they were both of Grove the entry is followed by a small p and a capitol W.
Not sure which one or both widowed.(if that is what the W stands for)
The small p perhaps for of the parish.

Another entry for Richard Hitchman to Elizabeth Boots 1 October 1821 just says both of Grove

William Kent to Mary Hitchman 14 October 1821 is also followed by a small p and capitol W, both of Grove.

Page 2 of the typed transcriptions printed 1908, it says abbreviations used w for widow/widower,
s -spinster, p- of the parish etc.

I was puzzled as it was a capitol W not lower case, because an earlier entry 8 September 1821 of

Jonathan Wellavise, w to Mary Ann Humphries. This one lower case following his name would indicate a widower, yes?

Can the W be for Wantage as in from Grove but married at Wantage.

It says both of Grove, parish Wantage.

Another one!
Next page, 14 Oct 1821
William Kent + Mary Hitchman, both of Grove, parish Wantage

The marriage before that is Richard Hitchman (or Hichman) and Elizabeth Boots, both of Grove, (comma there, but no p. W.!)

And this one at Wantage
a Mary Hitchman marries George Hull in Wantage 1816

11 Oct 1816
George Hall, of Grove, parish Wantage + Mary Hitchman (of ?)

Grove didn't become an ecclesiastical parish until 1835.
https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/BRK/Grove

Maybe some Grove residents in the 1820s were married in Grove chapel (then in the parish of Wantage) and others were married in Wantage parish church
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

According to the Victoria County History (1924) Grove was said to have had a chapel dedicated to St John the Baptist which was destroyed in 1733. A new church was built in 1832, and a new ecclesiastical parish formed three years later.
