Ann Green illegitimate child of Lucy Green South Normanton

Hi,

When Lucy Green marries Benjamin Marriott her Father is shown as George Green, a Miner.

On the 1861 census South Normanton
Piece 2425
Folio 67.

Ann Green born 1853 is living with her Grand Parents George & Mary Ann Green, as Grand daughter.
There is also another child Mary Green aged  6, listed as Grand daughter, however her mothers maiden name is Thompson, presumably the wife of one of lucey’s brothers.

Because Ann is bpt., as dau of Benjamin and Lucy it can be assumed that Benjamin was her Father also at the time of bpt., she was living with them.

Have you found Ann in the 1871 Census?  She is not with Lucy & Benjamin and not yet married.

Thanks for your help

I had the 1861 census for George Green but ignored Ann Green, as I presumed Ann and Mary were sisters, plus I was looking at that point for Ann Marriott.

As for 1871 I thought that Ann like Benjamin and Lucy might be living in Sheffield.  There is an
Ann G Marriott servant living in Ecclesall Bierlow, but it says birth Sheffield, so still looking.

I also looked at Ann G. Mattiott in 1871 census, I cannot find a suitable birth for her on freeBMD, and cannot find her on census prior to 1871 or a marriage. 

Think you can only record this as POSSIBLY your Ann.

It was quite normal for a man to take on the illegitimate child of his wife, and for that child to then take his name.

To be certain Benjamin was her birth father it will be a DNA match.

I have just looked again at my DNA again, and it looks like I do have matches to Benjamin Marriott and beyond.
