Ann Green illegitimate child of Lucy Green South Normanton
« on: Sunday 07 November 21 21:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find out about Ann Green birth 3 April 1853 south Normanton
Her mother Lucy Green married Benjamin Marriott South Normanton 20 Feb 1854

Ann Green was baptised in 1865 age 11 now called Ann Marriott along with 3 other siblings
I have Ann Marriott in 1861 living with a family called Hill, at south Normanton.
I am wondering if there might have been any documentation of her name change from Green to Marriott?

Ann Marriott married Joseph Handley 20 Aug 1871 in Sheffield her father was named as Benjamin Marriott.

Also wonder if there is a possibility that Benjamin really is Ann’s father?

Any help would be appreciated

Chris

No I don't think there would be any name change documentation, she just took on her step fathers name to match her siblings (presume the siblings were products of the Marriott marriage)

Impossible to say if he was really her father but suspect not.  Quite normal for her to have put his name when she got married especially as her mother married when she was just a baby.

That one was 10 and a servant which was grim especially if that was Ann Green as she would have only just turned 8.

Actually that might not be her because there is an Ann Marriott born South Normanton in 1850.
Need to check which one she was.

I take it you have a copy of the marriage certificate - how old does it say Ann was please?

Who were the witnesses.

Hi Millipede

Thanks for your replies,

Ann was aged 19 on the marriage certificate.

I am certain that Ann Marriott is the one on the census in 1861 as Samuel Hills great grandparents and Benjamin Marriotts grandparents are the same, William Riley and Frances Norwood.

I had previously looked on GRO for an Ann Marriott born 1853 MMN Green, then I found an Ann Green mother No MMN so I sent for that certificate and her mother was Lucy Green no father.

Since Ann married as Marriott I would suggest that she was indeed the daughter of Benjamin Marriott and born before her parents married.

I was going to suggest the same.

Do you have Ann’s birth certificate, and is the father’s name blank?

Undertaking some well considered DNA tests might answer the question. A descendant of Benjamin Marriott and a descendant of Ann Green? Or, a descendant of Ann Green and a descendant of one of her siblings perhaps?

Hi Annette and Ruskie

Thank you for your replies, I must say that I sort of wondered how she could be Ann Green at birth and then Ann Marriott. Yes I have the birth certificate and fathers name is blank.

I have done my DNA earlier this year, still trying to understand it, lol but was a good thing as I previously had Ann Marriotts father as Joseph Marriott (made the fatal mistake when I started of believing what I saw) they came from South Normanton and moved to Intake Sheffield, the same as Benjamin.

But then I began to see Benjamin Marriott in peoples trees and thought we must be connected somewhere. So I have changed Joseph’s details to Benjamin Marriott, (although I’ve just checked my relationship with a match and it’s still showing Joseph Marriott as my 2nd great grandfather, and not Benjamin)

I do have a common ancestor Samuel Marriott and Sarah Riley (Benjamin’s parents)

Thanks again
Chris
