Frogley family in Abingdon
« on: Wednesday 03 November 21 21:01 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help with looking up parish registers for Abingdon please?

I am looking for the baptism of Joseph Frogley in the 1790's or early 1800's.
He lived in London later in life and I have found him on the 1851 census with a birthdate of c1801 and on the 1861 census with a birthdate of c1794. He states that he was born in Abingdon and was a chairmaker by trade.

Hi Sarah,

I have found in the transcripts from the Oxford FHS a baptism for Joseph Frogley in Abingdon St.Helens;
27-7-1794 Joseph Frogley (s/o Joseph & Sarah - weaver).

Additionally I have also found this marriage - same church as above;
23-3-1788 Joseph Frogley to Sarah Dorn.

There is no other info listed.

I hope these help.

Hi Sarah,

If the marriage  of Joseph Frogley  & Sarah Dorn is the one to follow,
Then these records may help;

18-1-1808 Sarah  Frogley  buried.  w/o Joseph - weaver
3-11-1823  Joseph    "          "       of Boar Street, aged 59

also;
Sara & Elizabeth Dorne bapt. 28-8-1763 dtrs /o Richard & Elizabeth, sackweaver

marriage; 6-1-1745 Richard Dorn - m - Elizabeth Whiten

All the above entries from the Abingdon St.Helens transcripts ex Oxford FHS

Thankyou so much! Yes I'm sure this is the right family. Do you know if Joseph and Sarah had any other children? And is there a baptism for Joseph Frogley (senior)?

Hi Sarah,
I have managed to find the following baptisms in Abingdon St.Helens;
18-4-1790   Elizabeth Frogley d/o Joseph & Sarah, sackweaver
12-6-1791   William        "      s/o       "            "           "
26-8-1792   John            "        "        "            "          "
27-7-1794   Joseph         "        "        "           "      weaver
22-5-1796   Lydia            "      d/o      "            "     hempdresser
4-3-1798     Richard        "       s/o      "            "     weaver
16-6-1799   Robert         "         "        "            "          "
13-6-1802   Stephen       "         "        "            "          "

I haven't found yet a baptism for Joseph (senr)

Also I see there are more baptisms for a Joseph Frogley & Elizabeth, weaver
from 1810 to 1814.
In the absence of a 2nd marriage for Joseph to Eliza I can't say if this is the same Joseph as the one who married Sara Dorn.

 Hi Alan
I cannot thank you enough for all your help. You have filled the missing pieces of the jigsaw!

I've found a non-conformist birth record for a Frogley son of Robert and Elizabeth in Abingdon in 1764 and although no first name for the child is given I think it may be Joseph. If so I can now go back another generation or two. I will need to do some further investigation.

Thanks again for all your help.
Best wishes
Sarah
