what happened to Patrick O'Donnell and family after 1881
« on: Tuesday 02 November 21 22:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi there, the address of Patrick's birth is 4 Bright St Dennistoun in 1878, he is still there in the 1881 census as a 5 year old but his mum has died, his auntie and family have moved in. I cant find a census return for 1891, Patrick then marries Bridget Geraghty in 1908 and their address is 176 Garngad Rd. But I cannot find a census return for this as I'm not sure where Garngad was classed as being in  1901/1911. They are both still alive at the time of these census...Any suggestions on what I can do?
Thanks x

The index to the 1911 census lists just two Patrick O'Donnells in the City of Glasgow. Only one is aged 32, and he is listed in Garngadhill.

At the same address is Annie O'Donnell, 26.

I suggest that you look at that record and see what it tells you.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks for that, after I searched now on Scotlands records for Patrick on the 1891 census being 27 years old, I get one in Bothwell - is that it, I dont know where that is?! I've spent a fortune buying credits to check them and then they are wrong so dont want to chance it anymore?! Thanks

The SP index lists the death of Bridget Geraghty, other surname O*d*n*l*, aged 65, in Springburn in 1949.

Why would you search for him being 27 in 1891 if he was born in 1878? he would be 12 or possibly 13 on the date of the 1891 census depending on when he was born in 1878.

Bothwell is not part of the city of Glasgow. It is a parish and town further up the Clyde, about 12 miles south-east of Glasgow.

There are a 12-year-old Patrick O'Donnel (only one l) in Shettleston and an 11-year-old one in Bridgeton in 1891. Those are the only records of a P*t*r* O*d*n*l* of the right sort of age in the city of Glasgow in 1891. There are also two 12-year-olds, a Patrick in Edinburgh and a Peter in Stirling. (Peter and Patrick are used interchangeably in Scotland, so if you are looking for a Patrick and can't find him, try Peter, and vice versa.)

Have you looked at the 1911 census listing I suggested in Reply#4 above?

just trying to find addresses
In that case I recommend searching the Valuation Rolls on SP.

Start by looking for Bridget in 1940, then work back from there looking for Patrick.
