In a will of Ralph Muschamp probate 1653, he is stated as being from Sothericke, Northumberland. Any one know where this is?
Thanks
Tony

Possibles:
Southwick County Durham
Provide a snippet of the will to see if anyone else comes up with an alternative to your Sothericke

Looking at the will the name certainly looks like Sothericke.
He seems to be associated with the parish of Lowick.
Have you checked the old maps in that area for any possibilities?
I've looked at the (much later) Northumberland Name Books for Lowick, but nothing jumps out.

Parents are Sir George Muschamp and Elizabeth Selby of Barmoor. The family occupied properties across Northumberland - e.g. Lyham (Chatton Parish), Gatherick (Lowick Parish).

This will is a transcription of the original.
I am wondering if the transcriber misread the place name of Gatherick/Gathericke in Northumberland as Sothericke.
Gatherick is in the parish of Lowick, and was associated with the Muschamp Family.

Could it read 'S
o
of Lowick ?
I have seen 'South' recorded in 18th and 19th documents as 'S
o
'
Just a thought.

Hi Allan
I'm not convinced. The letters which I think you are reading as an 'o' and a 'w' are actually an 'e' and an 'r'
Added: I think what you are reading as S
o
is actually just an 'S' with an ornate twiddle at the top - compare with the 'S' on Secondly in line 6.
