Hi there

Just returned to searching my ancestors and I need a few pointers as to where to go next.
My 4x great grandfather is a John Lloyd b. abt 1770 in Shropshire. I believe he married a
Hannah Watkins in 1796 and the first of their 7 children was born in 1798, in Homer, Much
Wenlock, Shropshire. I have John and Hannah on the 1841 census living in Much Wenlock and
it just says b. Shropshire.
Where would I look to find their marriage and Johns birth, with common names that they have.
Seems to be a lot of possible John Lloyds on Ancestry.

Hi Ian

Remember that ages given in 1841 census for adults have been rounded down by up to 4 years.

Hannah is on 1851 census, Homer. Village, Much Wenlock, aged 80, widow, Lodger in the house of Mary Ward. She gives her place of birth as Wenlock, Salop.

Parish Registers are on FindMyPast for Much Wenlock.

John Lloyd, buried 2.3.1843: residence Homer aged 72 years

Hannah Lloyd buried 4.1.1853 residence Farley aged 76 years.  Her residence does not match,
But age consistent with rounded down age in 1841.

Thanks for your replies. I do have the details for the children, but not Hannah, shes new. Thanks
Spendlove. The deaths of both John and Hannah is new info, which is great.
How would I find the birth of John Lloyd? Looking on Ancestry is like looking for a needle in a
haystack. There are too many Johns. I dont suppose a visit to Shropshire Archives would be any
easier!

Hi,

Very difficult, would first attempt to see the actual marriage record for John & Hannah Watkins.
Unfortunately there is no image available of Family Search, and they have failed to indicate the Church and place of marriage. Images for this marriage do not appear on Ancestry or FindMyPast, they use Family search transcript.

It is possible that the marriage entry would state which parish they both belonged, not always the parish in which they were born but could be an indication of where the wife was born.

As John died prior to 1851 Census, you can only go on the 1841 which states born Shropshire.  You could look at other Lloyds  living in Shropshire, born about the same time as John and see if you can match baptism with same Father and Mother.

Hi,

Just found image on FindMyPast for Banns which reads:-

The banns of marriage between John Loyd of this Parish, a Batchelor and Hannah Watkins of this Parish spinster, were published 15th 22nd and 29th of May 1796.

By me Richard Smith Vicar.

The Images for commence 21 April 1755, so would look for a birth for either in Stow.

Sorry about last post, obviously getting old!

The images for marriage banns for Stow commence 1755, they can be seen on Find my Past.

Although the parish of residence when married, may not be where they were born thought it may be worth looking for a birth for either John Lloyd or Hannah Watkins in Stow.
