Look up Request for Hugh Evans, Llanfechain
« on: Thursday 01 September 05 13:38 BST (UK) »

Hi,

Could someone very kindly look on the 1841, and/or 1851 Census for Llanfechain, Montgomeryshire?
My G-G-Grandfather was Hugh Evans, born 1804/1805. Probably in Meifod, but he also states in other Census returns that he was born in Llanfechain.

He lived all his married life at Cae Dafydd, Llanfechain, and died at the age of 89.
The picture above is of Hugh and his wife Maria.

The 1871 Census is as follows:
Hugh Evans   Head  Mar  61  Ag. Lab.   Llanfechain, Montgomery.

Maria Evans   Wife   Mar  60                  Llanfechain, Montgomery. (she was actually born in Llangedwyn, Denbighshire)

Margaret Evans  Grand Daur    10         Llanfechain, Montgomery.

Jane Evans         Grand Daur      5         Llanfechain, Montgomery.

I don't know anything about the two Grandchildren. My G-Grandmother was their daughter Martha, who, at the time of the 1871 was away from home, working in service.

Any help will be very much appreciated.  ;)

Hi Dave,
I can't thank you enough for all the trouble you have gone to for me.
You've been very kind!!
I'm thrilled to have all this information!

My brother lives in Wrexham, and I plan to ring him and SEND him to Llanfechain/Meifod to search the cemeteries! I'm 3,000 miles away and so wish I could go too! It looks like it is a very pretty area.

The photograph of Hugh and Maria is part of an entire album of very old photos belonging to their daughter Martha, my G-Grandmother. Unfortunately we only can put names to a couple of them. If only people had written names and information on them.
I plan to put this album on my site, because you never know, maybe someone can connect with the people in it.

I only know a little about Hugh and Maria....They were called Memma and Tetta by their many Grandchildren and G-Grandchildren. (Not Nain and Taid!)

One Christmas when they were newly married, Hugh bought a goose and brought it home. Neither had the heart to do away with it, so it lived for many years as a much loved pet! That story and the picture is all I know about them, and thanks to you, I now have another place to investigate: Taram Hall.

Thanks again Dave, I truly appreciate what you did for me today,
Susan.

Hi Susan, you are very fortunate to have so many photographs of your ancestors.   I have very few and none earlier than my grandparents.
Best of luck in your searching, Dave

Hi Dave,
Thanks again for all the help. It's truly appreciated.
You have a wonderfully large family tree and I'm very envious. Thanks so much for sharing it with me. What a lot of hard work you have done.  ;)

Sometimes I wish I didn't live on the other side of the world, so far from home.
I need my own private plane just for genealogy research, because I want to go to Llanfechain right now!!!
Kindest regards,
Susan.

Hi Susan, it's me again!

I had a niggle in the back of my head about the address of Hugh and family in 1841.   I looked through the 1851 and 1861 returns for Llanfechain and there was an address in both called Jaram.   These are typed lists so whoever transcribed them, consistently transcribed it as Jaram not Taram.
I must admit I did have doubts myself as the initial letter in the handwritten 1841 could have been a 'T' or 'J' (even 'F').
Hope this helps, perhaps the building is still there
Cheers Dave
