How to find Irish certificates that are not in Irish Genealogy
« on: Wednesday 27 October 21 08:02 BST (UK) »
I'm searching for birth/death/marriage certificates and military information that I can't find in Irish Genealogy.ie or Groni. All brothers born in Belfast.  Is anyone able to head me in a direction where else to look please.

Andrew Dowds  - not known - WW2 Ulster rifleman
William Dowds born about 1925 - WW2 Royal Marine - enlisted around 1942 at 17 but put his age up.
Hugh Dowds - not known
Samuel Dowds - not known

Thank you

"GRONI is often asked 'Why can’t I find my birth record online?'  The answer is that only Northern Ireland historic registration records are available to search online.  The records available are:

- birth records over 100 years old
- marriage records over 75 years old
- death records (including World War II death records) over 50 years old

You cannot find civil partnership and more recent birth, death and marriage records online however, if you want to search or view these, you can book an appointment at GRONI's Public Search Room in Belfast or, if you know the details, you can apply online for certificates......

There is a photo of Hugh Dowds (starting his national service) in the Belfast Telegraph  of 3 April 1947, page 3

It mentions Andrew and William

Reported age in the burial record for Samuel Walker Dowds indicates a birth year c. 1933, mother Miriam is in the same grave:

Thank you both for your replies, I'm in Australia and searching in Ireland is new to me, I've joined Find my Past for 12 months (thought it was for 3 months ha ha) so I'll see what I can find.  I'll also look through the Births and Deaths, it does take a bit of looking around.  Thank you again.

Gaffy, where do I find that Miriam is in the same grave?

Click on the 'Grave section and number', that will bring back all (in this case two) grave occupants, then click 'View details' to see the record for each occupant.
