Look up please for Michael Forkin
« on: Thursday 01 September 05 13:09 BST (UK) »
Could someone kindly look up my G-G Grandfather in the Census for 1841, and or 1851 please?

His name was Michael Forkin, born in Co. Mayo, Ireland in 1821.

The 1861 Census shows him living in Brown's Yard, New St.  Burton-on-Trent.
Listed as follows:

Michael Forkin  Head 40  Mar Labourer      Ireland.  (G-G-Grandfather)
Mary        Do      Wife 50  Mar  --------        Do.
James      Do      Son    6                       Stafford, Burton on Trent.  (G-Grandfather)
Thomas    Do      Son    4                       Stafford, Burton on Trent.
Margaret  Do     Daur    2                       Stafford, Burton on Trent.
~~~~~~~~------
I have no idea where Michael and Mary came from in Co. Mayo, Neither do I know when they came over to live in England.
Any help with be very much appreciated  :D
Hi,
My grandmother was a Forkan from Mayo.  Michael and James were very common names among the Forkans.  They lived in Treenkeel and Carrick, Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo.  Many of Kelly's from that same area were married to Forkans.  My great grandfather, Anthony Forkan was born about 1816.  One of his nephews, James, did move to England. On some of the records that I have from Ireland, the spellling varies from Forkan to Forkan.  It also appears that Forkan is not a real common name and that they all seem to be in Mayo.  My grandparents moved to America (Chicago) in the late 1800S.  You may want to try the listing of the tenants in the Parish of Killedan, Co. Mayo.
Hi Bkelly!
My grandmother was a Forkan from Mayo, as well...right near Kiltimagh!  Her name was Maria, born 1881.  She married Michael Reilly, and lived in Tullinahoo, Mayo  My mom, Teresa Reilly Doan, their daughter, is still living quite well at the age of 96, here in Canada.  She and my other Detroit cousins have said, in the past, that many of the Forkans came to the State.  I've been to Mayo, and stayed in Tullinahoo,  Kiltimagh and Swinford.  There are still quite a few Forkans living there...one of whom even fixed our car at a garage that he owns in the town.  Perhaps there are records of Forkin's too.
Thank, Trish!
My search for Michael, who died during the war, leaves me with the issue of Forkan and Forkin... But as I discovered, even the census uses the 'in' ending when the individuals, themselves, did not...It's a part of the family history that may never get solved...perhaps, it follows suit with the dropping of the "O", I don't know!
Anyways, CHEERS from Canada,
