Cody (or Coady) and Barnwell Surnames - 1840's to 1850's in Wexford
« on: Sunday 17 October 21 15:20 BST (UK) »
Hello, I'm seeking a connection to an Edward Cody (or Coady) and a Mary Barnwell in County Wexford.  I know that in 1864, their daughter Johanna married my 3x great grandfather, Felix Lynch from County Tyrone in Northern Ireland, in Quebec - she was just 14.  Her parents (Edward and Mary) are noted as deceased.  Not sure if they came to Canada during that time or if Johanna went as a "child" - I see some of these names in the Wexford information, but nothing definitive.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you so much.  Tracy

- Why do you think Johanna was 14? Was that a given age, or is that an age calculated by subtraction from an age on a later document, such as an age at death, or on a census?

- What makes you think Johanna was from Wexford?

So, this says she was aged ~20 when married in 1864.

If actually married in 1863, and was a minor, then that means under 21,  around 19, if above close to correct.

There is a Johanna Cody age 15 in the 1861 census in Arthabaska Canada East with another 25 Cody male and females of varying ages all born Ireland.
Have you looked at possible siblings of Johanna's father Edward to see if they tie in with any of the Cody's on the 1861 census?

I just love how folks help in the search, I greatly appreciate all of you.  Ancestry Marriage record - from Canada Vital Records makes note of marriage in 1863 and father was Edwardi and mother Mary (spellings are not great back then) - married Felix Lynch.  Another record notes 1861 - lots of Cody's and I see Johanna's name and age as 15.  Daughter Mary Agnes birth in Quebec states May 1864 to Johanna and Felix.  And then Johanna's death in 1867.  Again all of this resides primarily in Canada records, Church or civil records.  1863 St. Patrick's church marriage record states her parents have passed (Mary & Edward) and she's from Wexford.  Hope this helps?

Edwardi is perhaps one of the declensions for Edwardus/Eduardus, Latin for Edward (w not being in the Latin alphabet, u representing u and "double u"). Or it could be an all too frequent Ancestry transcription error. Always look at the original!

On that theme, have you checked the original to make sure that it really says Wexford? - Irish placenames are often mistranscribed!

In any case, I hope you will agree that all of the above says that she was not aged 14 when she married?

Yes it would appear that you are all correct - older than my initial "scare" that she was 14.  I'm seeing 1867 as birth for daughter, Mary Agnes - and potential birth year of 1848 - so I'll pick 18 for now.  Close enough.  In terms of where in Ireland - well Felix was a County Tyrone boy (N. Ireland) and on that same marriage record it reads:  of the County of Wexford, parents deceased - Edward Codee (so again - is it Cody or Codee) and Mary Barnwell.  Any ideas?

And it's worded "minor daughter of"... Edward and Mary , etc.
