Beach or Bache family of Tanworth (-in-Arden)
« on: Saturday 16 October 21 03:44 BST (UK) »
Hello, I am seeking information about the Beach family when they were in Tanworth in the 1700s and early 1800s, of whom Thomas Beach was an early founder of Avery Scales before he passed the business on to the Avery family. There was a RootsChat topic about this 11 years ago and for reference I am attaching a Beach Tree * which jim1 found and attached in that post.

I am descended from Richard Beach 'of Winson Green' (1742-1816). My 3x grandparents William and Maria Beach were buried in Richard's vault in the mid 1800s, William being a grandson. (I have quite a lot of information about this branch of the Beach family if anyone is interested)

Richard, I believe, was part of the early brass industry, and considered wealthy when he died. I'd like to know any information, but my main 2 questions here are:

(1) Re "George Beach/Bache of Blackford": He appears to have been married in Solihul and his children born in Tanworth (Family Search). Would anyone know what 'of Blackford' might mean? A house perhaps? (Perhaps not coincidentally, according to an Internet Archives publication search, a Bache family did live in another place called Blackford in 1400 or 1500s or so.)

(2) I know I am related to Richard of Winson Green because the grave's memorial says he is a grandfather. His and wife Mary Maria's children were Richard, John, Sarah and William. But I am missing the son who produced William Beach his grandson. Through one source I am lead to believe the son was called Thomas (who married Sarah). Would anyone know anything more?

Thanks for reading, hope someone has a clue or two  :)

* note: I have no idea where this tree came from other than jim1 posted it and apparently found it on the Avery Scales website 11 years ago, where it is no longer available. I would assume Avery Scales had included the tree as part of a detailed history of their business. Unfortunately, now Avery Scales has airbrushed out Thomas Beach, and all its interesting history details and it now only rates a mention in RootsChat and a page on Grace's Guide (see https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/W._and_T._Avery)

Hello Annbee and welcome to RootsChat.

Just to help others who may like to help, here is the thread mentioned with the BEACH tree:

For interest - have you seen the newspaper item about a robbery at the house of Richard BEACH at Winson Green in 1813? Happy to give you a copy if you haven't seen it.  :)

"of Blackford"

Looking at a current map of the Solihull/Shirley District (Post Code B90) Tanworth Lane runs southwards from it's junction with the Stratford Road.  After just over a quarter of a mile from the Stratford Road, on the right hand side, is the junction of Dickens Heath Road.  Blackford House stood at this junction on the west side of Tanworth Lane and the south side of Dickens Heath Road.  Source: Ordnance Survey Warwickshire Sheet XIX.SE published 1886, available to view fron the National Library of Scotland.

Thanks maddys52, I have already got the article on the robbery - what a frightening event it was.  Did you know they caught the men and in April of that year there's a brief article of how they hung a Thomas Whitehouse in front of, I think I recall, is it called Warwickshire Goal... The other two were luckier and were sent to Australia, which is where I've also travelled to after a childhood in Worcester. My grandfather Richard, who was robbed,  was the father of Sarah Guppy, apparently well known in Bristol, and in general, for being an inventor and an engineer in the early 1800s on.  Go Sarah!

ScobieDrom the map is very helpful,  thank you. I have since found out the house had been 'settled' by George Bache,  perhaps that means built,  or perhaps not.  And it was demolished in 1936 apparently. I also found out Bristol Library has a book on the Guppy family of Bristol (which mentions Sarah's ancestors),  but I'm afraid it's a bit far away for me :) ! However,  Family Search in a genealogical section had a few notes from the book so that's added a couple of details.  Plus a couple more mysteries.
