John Byrne - 'Commitment for penalty and costs'
« on: Tuesday 12 October 21 12:12 BST (UK) »
I have a document titled 'Commitment for penalty and costs' dated to 1873 for John Byrne of 'Dirty Lane - Biddulph'.

I believe I have found a potential birth year; 1849 (from an 1851 census).

But I cannot find any follow up to this commitment for a drunken offence; I'm not even sure where the original document is stored (my guess is the Staffordshire Record Office).

Ideally I would like to find: confirmation of the 1849 birth year, and some more info surrounding the 1873 commitment for penalty (for a drunken offence) - I'm especially keen to find out whether or not the fine was paid or if he did end up doing the 14 days of hard labour.

Thanks!

confirmation of the 1849 birth year

You can look on Free BMD index for his birth (presuming he was born England/Wales)

Who is he with on the 1851 census age 2?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

The 1871 census has a John Byrne residing in the huts in Dirty Lane, Biddulph. He's aged 44, from Ireland, with a wife Winifred and 5 children.

Thanks Shaun J - that sounds more like him then the other census I found! That really helps!

Thanks Milliepede for your response - 'Shaun J' commented that they found another census for John Byrne on dirty-lane which puts his birth year back to c. 1827, I think this is much more likely to be the John I'm looking for then the other John Byrne born in 1849.

Hi John Byrne from Dirty Lane and Winifred are my Great,Great Grandparents.
they moved to England from Roscommon in Ireland circa 1850 just after they married.
back home in Ireland our surname was spelled BEIRNE, when we arrived in England, it then became BYRNE.
they settled for a time in Congleton, where John worked as a Harm Labourer according to my Great Grandfathers Birth certificate.
they then moved out towards Bidduph/Brindley Ford.
John worked as a Puddler at at the Robert Heath Iron and Coal company at Biddulph Valley, and was followed into this occupation by his SonS.

I would very much like to see this document, as of course it has a sentimental conection, but also, because i am interested in old documents, and have a collection of historic documents myself.

i still live in the area, but i did not see this post untill my friend who lives in Roscommon contacted my and bought it to my attention.

i cant believe i'm reading this!!!!

thank you in anticipation.

Bob Byrne. :o :o :o
