Unusual first name
« on: Sunday 10 October 21 17:10 BST (UK) »
I have an ancestor called Eletch (sometimes spelt Elatch) Burton. She was born in Pimlico 1840.
I have her baptism, 1881 and 1911 census only. I am sure she didn't marry before the age of 69, if at all. With such an unusual name I thought she would be easier to track. She doesn't appear with her family as a baby or young child but I can track both parents and all her siblings from birth to death.

Has anyone ever come across the name Eletch before or have any idea of its origin?
If you have a connection to or have more information about Eletch, I would be happy to hear from you.

Thanks

How odd that she's not with her family in the 1841 and 1851 census.
If she was still in the Pimlico area c1861, you won't find her. The 1861 census for Pimlico and Belgravia have not survived.

Yes a bit odd isn't it.  Baptism gives date of birth 30 July 1840 but baptised 27 Feb 1848.

Father Benjamin
Mother Ann Maria

Marriage in 1825 Lambeth.

Very unusual name.

I think Rosie has the right birth registration in Sep qtr 1841 (the unusual name helps!) and the year of birth given on the baptism is wrong.
So, also going on the 30 July birthday, she would not have been born when the 1841 census was taken on 6 June.

Yes I too agree with that as there is a 1 year old Susan in 1841.

Her birth registered Dec 1839 as Susannah.

This post reminds me when looking for 2 of my female ancestor's named Fridas/ Frides who decided to call themselves Annie, rather than trying to explain their christian names.

Working on a theory similar to my own situation I wonder if she was called sometimes Ellen. Eletch does not seem to have moved around a great deal between 1881-1911 census, staying in the general area of Chelsea. Based on this could she be the the Ellen Burton aged 60 born St Pancras (1.6 miles from St George Han Sq and who I cannot find anywhere else. 1901 Ref rg13 89 84 23. Based on this a possible death Ellen Burton aged 77 Kensington sq 1a 104.

May be worth something for the back burner?

John

That household on the 1901 entry has been crossed out,  I wonder if it is entered elsewhere
