James Cameron of Fort George, Ardersier
« on: Friday 01 October 21 13:03 BST (UK) »
Trying to track down what happened to James Cameron, b.1871. He was a soldier at Fort George 1894-1906 with the Cameron Highlanders.
He was born in West Ham, London in 1871 to Hugh Cameron & Ann (nee Ewing). I can't track down what became of him after 1906, whether he married or had issue, or perhaps emigrated.
On the 1911 census in Glasgow is a James Cameron & wife Margaret (nee Early??) with two daughters but I can find no marriage for this James or birth for his daughters.

I see his parents married in Scotland in 1868.

Where are the family 1881 - 1891 - England or Scotland?

What birthplace is given for him on the 1911 - was it England?

Please give details of the children's names/birthyears/birthplaces

How many years had they been married at the time of the census?

If the children were born in Scotland - have you downloaded one of the birth certs which will confirm if Margaret's maiden name was Early (you seem to be doubtful) & should also show location & year of marriage

Slight repeat it took a while to find them.

Is this the family on the 1901 census?

Plantation, Glasgow, James 40, Margaret 32, Mary 2, Catherine 0.

If so how long had they been married and where did it state the children were born. None registered in Plantation but plenty elsewhere.

Opening post quotes 1911 census but does not give info re birthplace or years married.  It also mentions he was a soldier until 1906.  His English birth reg confirms mmn Ewing but I can't find him on 1881 census in England or Scotland

Colin - does the 1901 entry you found show birthplace England?  Also - in 1901 he would only be 30 if b 1871.  Do you mean 1911 census?

The possible 1911 census entry (West Scotland St, Govan) shows this James Cameron was born in England, he is the right age. It says he was married in 1905. His brother in law is listed living with them, his name looks like Lawrence Early. I cannot find a possible marriage fitting these facts.
James & Margaret's daughters were Mary b.1909 & Catherine 1910 both Lanarkshire. I can't find births/baptisms for these girls.
James' occupation was a fireman, locomotive.

I note Lawrence in  1911.

EURLY   LAWRENCE   1911   28   Plantation   Lanark

There were two Margarets born in Scoland and one Lawrence

EARLY   MARGARET   1879      Shettleston
EARLY   MARGARET   1880      Canongate

EARLY   LAURENCE      1883   692/2 528   Leith South

No Census returns for Margaret Early after her birth and no marriages/
