St Aiden's Church, Normanton
« on: Monday 20 September 21 15:29 BST (UK) »
Hi Rootschatters,

I've just discovered that ggrandfather is buried at this church along with other ancestors.   I can't find it online - does anyone in the area know the church or whether it has another name?

Would be most grateful for any info...
Thanks

Hi,

Are you sure you have the correct information?  Nearest St. Aidens church I can see is in Basford.

Supplying name and death year of your ggrandfather would enable others to search or supply info as to where you obtained burial information.

Hi Spendlove,

I'm reading the info from a letter, which was written by a great uncle.

My ggrandfather's name was John COOPER 22/11/1815 - 3/11/1899 - I believe he lived at Sunny Hill House, Normanton....

The churches in Normanton Derby are Victorian and tend not to have their own churchyard.

There is South Normantion in Derbyshire but the church is St Michaels and all Angels.

Thanks for the info jaywit.  The letter says that his gravestone stands near the main entrance along with 20 smaller stones bearing the same name...

Hi,

There is a report in the Derby Mercury, Wednesday 5th November

The late Mr. John Cooper

The funeral of the late Mr. John Cooper, whose death has been previously announced, took place at Normanton Church, on Tuesday Morning last.  The first part of the service was conducted in the Congregational Chapel.

The report gives info of mourners etc etc.   “ the following gentlemen preceded the funeral cortège from the Chapel to the Church Yard”

From this it would appear he was buried in St. Giles, Normanton, which is a surprise as most urban churches were not allowed burials after the Burial Act of 1853.

Hi Comberton,

Thanks for the connection, however there appears to be an error with this entry, which states cemetery is Derby Cathedral however if you scroll down to the cemetery image it is for St. Giles, Normanton.

Not registered for this site so cannot correct.
