All Saints Church - Habergham Eaves, nr Burnley
« on: Wednesday 31 August 05 19:57 BST (UK) »
Still seeking the marriage of my 2 x Gt Grandfather John Whittaker (sometimes Whitaker) and Susannah (surname unknown). :'(

John was born at Lowerhouse, Habergham Eaves in abt 1829 - and married Susannah sometime before the 1861 census, where they were still living at Lowerhouse.  (Susannah's birthplace given as Briercliffe, and aged 32 making her b circa 1829 ).

Does anyone know of (or even hold) any transcripts for marriages at All Saints Church for, say, between 1845 and 1861?  I feel that John and Susannah could have possibly married here.

Indicentally, Susannah died in 1868 and is buried in the cemetary of All Saints Church.  (5 months later, John remarried Fanny Stanworth - but that's a whole different story)! :-\

If John remarried Susannah's sister, that was illegal until about 1904 ....

Hi Dotty, Diana

I don't think Susannah was Fanny's sister, as I have the families census for 1841 and 1851 and no sign of a Susannah.

She MAY have been a relative (cousin etc), and I've yet to find this out.

I think the best thing for me to do is to order the M Cert and see if the father's names give any clues, but as I'm not sure of John's father's name anyway at this stage, I could still be stabbing in the dark!!

Thanks for your suggestions anyway!

Cheers......  Alison

Hi Again,

I just realised that marriages for both All Saints and Holy Trinity (the parish church) are on the BVRI2 discs for the period but no sign of John and a Susannah.  I did find a Susannah Stanworth on the 1851 census in Habergham Eaves age 22 living as a lodger in Muschamp Yard (next to Foundry Street) but born Pendle Forest.  Pendle Forest covered a multitude of places including Reedley Hollows which isn`t that far from Briercliffe.  I noticed looking through the census that most of the Stanworths did come from Briercliffe.

Regards,

Mo
