Help with unusual surname - L'Ony

I don't normally ask for help with general research but I have been stuck on this family for a long time!  I think I have struggled with the apsotrophe!  Here is what I know:

Susannah L'Ony was married to George Hassan in 1777 in Westminster (Father - John L'Ony).  There is a christening for Susanna L'Ony in St Olaves on 27th July 1766 (Father - John L'Ony).  At first it seems that she would be to young to be married, but the her burial record in July 1812 in Westminster gives her birth date as 1858 (aged 54).  So I have assumed that she was christened as an 8 year old.

That's all I feel confident about.  I have made a note about a will (found on Ancestry) which suggests John L'Ony (transcribed as John J'Ony) died in 1776 but I can't access it at the moment.

I tried searching J'Ony as well as L'Ony and all I could find were 2 marriages - Martha L'Ony to John Hollamby in 1771 and John L'Ony to Mary Rolls in 1778.  I would like to find out more about these 2 families and if they were linked to Susannah

I also found a 1764 marriage between Susanna or Susannah Gilder and John Jony.  But I can't really link them with my Susannah apart from the obvious connections of their first names.

And if this is correct then it throws further confusion on to the birth date of my Susannah.

So can anyone add anything to this and give me a little nudge in the right direction.

I think you need to be looking at J'Ony records.

The J'Ony family were apothecaries in London in the C18th - I looked at some records about them a few years ago as they were connected to a family I researched for a client.

There are a number of family wills, BMD records and a Chancery case I seem to remember.

If you haven't already, I would recommend trying every mis-transcription you can think of and then thinking of some more.

Boutflowers/flours have been transcribed as Bootflour, Bootfour, Boltflour, Balflour, Baltflour, Boatflour, Bootflower etc.. etc.. My great great grandfather died at sea. I knew how and where he died from a family member but couldn't find the record until I put a random collection of letters into the search box and hit the jackpot.

Liony and Iiony might be worth a go.

Try using wildcard searches, where ? replaces 1 letter and * replaces several letters. For Example ?'Ony should give you both L'Ony and J'Ony entries in a search.

The 1776 will for J’ony leaves everything to his wife Susannah.  So not overly helpful at this stage.

I do normally try alternative spellings, but I haven't quite got around how to include apostrophes in searches.  Even Google ignores me.  I'm sure they are trying to be helpful, but...

I haven't even really worked out if the name was pronounced with an L or a J.  I had always assumed L, as that was the first one that I came across so I assumed that J was the mistake.  But from what Antony says earlier in the thread, maybe I have been focusing on the wrong letter.

Thanks Lily.  I would like to try to link the widow Susannah with my Susannah (Hassan).  But the possible marriage and the date of the baptism are not helping!

Not being facetious, but have you tried "Loony" and "Looney"?
