William Ross, lookup request please

Hi all,

this is a compicated one, so I'll try to explane what I'm looking for.

Looking for any information about William Ross from Edinburgh Scotland.
According to census 1841 he was living in Southwark, John Street, West , nr. 11 with 14 other people.
He was 25 years old according to the census and he was a Lantern Maker.

I don't know where he was census 1851 and 1861.
Census 1871 has him living in Deptford (59 years old) with his nephew William T Nelthropp and niece Lydia J.
But....., William and Lydia (nee Noble) were married to each other since 1868.

So first question: if William Nelthropp was his nephew and Lydia was his niece how were these two both related to William Ross. I find this very confusing.

Second, third and fourth  question: where was William Ross in 1851 and 1861. When was he born and who were his parents. When and where did he die (I presum Lomdon area, but not sure).

Any help grately appreciated.

Oh btw, census 1841 shows that both William Nelthropp and Lydia Noble were living at the same address as William Ross (John Street, West, nr. 11, Southwark). So they knew each other probably all their lives.

Could be one of those situations when somebody is referred to as Uncle although not biologically related.  An “honorary” title.   Where were William & Lydia born?

William 4 yrs
George 3 yrs

There are baptisms for William Tell and George Matthew with parents William Tell Nelthropp and Jane.
George’s birth shows mother as Hobbs.

Also as you say there is:
John Noble 25 yrs b Scotland
Lydia 25 yrs
Lydia 2 yrs

Lydia’s birth shows mmn Taylor

William Ross, Cousin, 39 yrs model and Pattern Maker in Wood b Edinburgh, Scotland is living with the Noble family in Southwark.

John Noble is b Edinburgh.

There is a child William Ross Nelthropp born to your couple in 1871 so perhaps indicative of a close relationship.

In 1871 the description of nephew and niece, not literal, but one is by marriage.

William Tell Nelthropp married first Mary Ann King 13 April 1825 St Saviour Southwark, they had a son George bap 10 September 1826 at St. Saviour he died age 4 1829 of Higgins Lane buried St Nicholas Olave London.

I have not found the death of his wife.
William Tell Nelthropp widow married  Jane Hobbs spinster 7 August 1836 at St Leonard's Shoreditch

William Ross, lodger, unmarried, Engineer born Scotland.

As William is described as a cousin in the Noble household and both John Noble and William Roass show Edinburgh as their birthplace, it seems likely that the relationship is to Lydia rather than William Nelthropp.

There is a death in Greenwich (living in that district in 1871 census)
