Married in two Halifax churches?
« on: Sunday 12 September 21 13:22 BST (UK) »
My great great grandparents Eliza Ann Hudson and Joseph William Daniels were married in All Soul's Church in 1878.  I have recently found another entry for them in the same year at St Edward The Confessor, Brotherton.  The All Souls entry just says November, with no day.

Was the Brotherton church a different religion? I have never found a baptism for Eliza Ann who was born in Halifax, nor her father Phineas who was born in Northowram according to the census.  I recently met up with a cousin who told me our aunt once said that Eliza Ann was Jewish but non practising, no one in the family had heard of that before!

Were either of the entries Banns, rather than a marriage?

The marriage was in the Halifax Registration District - which doesn't include Brotherton?

In which parish was All Souls?

Ah okay.  I have just looked again and there are 3 dates so a banns? All Souls is in Haley Hill, where  the bride was living.  The groom lived in Crown St, Halifax

Brotherton seemed to be a bit far out

Banns would have been called in both the bride's church and the groom's church, on 3 successive Sundays prior to the wedding.

It's the parishes where they were living at the time and NOT where they were born ;)

It's an Ancestry error.

For some reason searching for the marriage with just the surnames and year brought up only one result, which was claimed to be in Brotherton. Looking at the register (which is banns rather than marriages), it's rather suspicious that most of the addresses are in Halifax, so I investigated further.

This banns register has the WYAS reference WDP78/1/4/1, and the WYAS guide to parish registers shows that WDP78 is All Souls, Haley Hill. Brotherton is WDP74. You can see this at https://www.wyjs.org.uk/media/69612/collection-guide-1-parish-registers.pdf

I've no idea why the actual marriage didn't appear in the search results - presumably one of the names was indexed wrongly. Anyway, it can be seen by browsing - go to the marriage registers section and then select Halifax, Haley Hill, All Souls and the year 1878.

Ancestry's error in attributing the banns register to Brotherton really needs to be reported to them, though it's not certain that they'll do anything about it. Meanwhile you can enter the correct location manually, which might prevent others being misled.
