His occupation in 1901 & 1911 is Gardener, and in 1891 he appears to be at Salem Street, Bishopwearmouth, boarding with a family named Robson – RG12/4139/29/52

Thomas Proud 37 Single Gardener b Sunderland

1881 he is with parents John & Elizabeth plus various siblings at Mill Farm, Durham Road, Bishopwearmouth – RG11/4993/66/58

1871 at Red House, Bishop Wearmouth with parents & siblings – RG10/5006/27/47

1861 at at Proud Farm, Tunstall Road, Bishopwearmouth - RG9/3772/59/19

Based on the later children, Elizabeth's maiden name appears to be ORAM, but I can't find a Proud/Oram birth registration for Thomas, and there is a gap between Thomas's birth (1854) and the next child Robert William (1858).

John Proud married Elizabeth Oram in 1857, so Thomas's birth was prior to this marriage.  John was also about 12 years older than Elizabeth, so the unknown is currently whether Thomas was John's son, or Elizabeth's.

Had some spare time when I was in Local Studies in Sunderland  today and had a look to see if I could find any information on your Proud family. If you send me your email address in a personal message I would be only too pleased to forward copies of baptism and burial records I came across.

Will briefly run through them:

Burials for John Proud (Farmer) died 1891, his wife Elizabeth (nee Oram) died 1913

Burials for Thomas Proud (Gardener) died 1925, his wife Elizabeth (nee Reed) died 1953

Burial for Isabella Proud (1868 - 1869) daughter of John & Elizabeth Proud (nee Oram)

All buried in Bishopwearmouth Cemetery, Sunderland

Baptisms for the six children of John & Elizabeth all baptised at St. Michael's Church, Bishopwearmouth.

Robert William Proud born 1858
Elizabeth Ann born 1860
Caroline Mary born 1864
Joseph born 1865
Isabella born 1864
James Oram Proud born 1869

John Proud & Elizabeth Oram were married in the June Q 1857 in Sunderland, checking records I have believe this could have taken place in the Register Office.

Checked for a baptism for Thomas either as Proud or as Oram unable to find anything, will have another look at other churches on my next visit. I do feel that Thomas was born Oram and took the name Proud when his mother married John.

Look forward to hearing from you.

I'm struggling to find Elizabeth Oram before her marriage, so it would be interesting to know what her marriage certificate says.

The only Thomas Oram baptism I can find is at St Laurence, Pittington on 21 Sep 1856 Thomas s/o Joseph & Anne Oram, High Pittington, pitman, although I can't find any of them in the census, nor can I find any other baptisms to this couple, or a marriage.  There's also no obvious birth registration for Thomas  :-\ ???

Found possibilities for Elizabeth in the census in 1841 there is an 8 year old Elizabeth Orim with her father John (born 1786) a labourer in Stockton, Co. Durham.

1851 Elizabeth Oran born 1833 a house servant for a farmer at Field House Houghton le Spring, Co. Durham.

Thomas is proving a problem, with the possibility that the 1851 Elizabeth is his mother did check baptisms in Houghton for a Thomas Oram but nothing came of it.

The image of the 1841 is census says Cornforth (about 15 miles outside Stockton, near Spennymoor), which would fit with the baptism at Bishop Middleham 3 Jan 1833 of Betsey d/o John & Susan Oram, Cornforth.

Elizabeth Proud gives her PoB as Cornforth.
