There is an east cliffe farm in steeple Langford, but it is near Wilton in Wiltshire and not Bath

Steeple Langford is about 30 miles from Bath but about 5 from Salisbury,  but the register clearly says Bath.
It is also less than 20 miles from Fittleton.

I have just found something that confuses the family even more.
1881 census for Clyffe farm, Steeple Langford.

Name:   John S. Swayne
Age:   26
Birth Year:   abt 1855
Relationship to Head:   Son
Father:   Thos.P. Swayne
Where born:   Little Langford, Wiltshire, England
Civil Parish:   Steeple Langford
County/Island:   Wiltshire
Country:   England
Street Address:   East Clyffe
Occupation:   Farmers Son
Registration District:   Wilton
Piece:   2074
Folio:   36
Page Number:   7
Household Members:
Name   Age
Thos.P. Swayne   62
John S. Swayne   26
Mary Swayne   24
Stephen Swayne   19

And then

Name:   John Staples Swayne
Baptism Date:   7 Apr 1855
Baptism Place:   Little Langford, Wiltshire, England
Father:   Thomas Perrier Swayne
Mother:   Caroline

So when and how did the whatley/wately name appear or do we have the wrong family?

The Watley name probably appeared when John S Swayne got  Julia Watley pregnant  but didn;t marry her. She gave his full name as forenames to her child, and her surname. Hence  John SS Watley, who was stated to be illegetimate on his birth cert

John S Swayne dies in 1888

That would seem most likely.
