How to find Prisoner's charges in Mountjoy Prison
« on: Monday 23 August 21 22:10 BST (UK) »
Hello:

I have discovered an ancestor spent some time at Mountjoy prison and was wondering if I could find out what he was charged and convicted of? Being from Canada, I can not get over to Ireland for some time until Covid is under control.

I am so curious to know and hope he wasn't a murderer!!!
George Leathem from 18 Valentine Street, Belfast
Born 1897-
23 years of age at admission to prison. Number 836 (not sure if that is his prison number)

Any help would be very greatly appreciated as my curiosity is getting the best of me.

Thank you so much in advance,

Hi Suemagoo
Findmypast have the prison records online. I am not sure but family Search might also have them. If you do it online then you will find out if your ancestor was a career criminal or just locked up for using bad language.

Thank you both for suggesting the newspapers and Find My Past.  Nothing in the papers and will have to renew my subscription to Find My Past and see if I can find something out on my ancestor.

Take care and stay safe from Covid.

Cheers from Canada!!!

Morning Suemagoo. Don't be too alarmed to find that a relative was imprisoned in Mountjoy or any other jail at the turn of the century or early 20's. I was so embarrassed initially when I found my great grandfather was in and out of Mountjoy, but, then I discovered he was a heavy drinker and was imprisoned mostly for breaches of the peace. It was commonplace for people to be imprisoned for very minor offences. Do you have a library for the Church of the latter day saints (Mormons) near you? The one in Dublin allowed me hours of free access to all kinds of records some years ago.

Hi Ourgang !!!

Sorry for delay in responding to you kind words.  I have been very open minded and non judgemental regarding my ancestors and the times and ways when they were alive. You are so kind in providing me with advice on the LDS centres and I will check out if there are any near where I live.

Thanks again and stay safe from Covid to you and your family.
Cheers!!
Susan

This depends on your perspective. I see no shame nor embarrassment in finding a prisoner in my tree. I'm just thankful not to find the prison dodgers. The real criminals. i.e the rich, the slave traders, those who get fat on the misery, deprivation and hard work of others. The Lords, the "gentlemen",  the landed gentry, feudal landlords, the mill owners, and etc. etc.
These are the real embarrasment. The real criminals.
