Lieutenant Richard Mayne - 30th Regiment of Foot
« on: Wednesday 18 August 21 16:52 BST (UK) »
I am assisting a friend in trying to find information about her ancestor, Richard Mayne. All she knows about him is that he was born in Ireland, possibly Dublin, around 1787/1788 and served as a Lieutenant with the 30th Regiment of Foot from 1809 until his death in 1827 at the Infantry Barracks, Canterbury, Kent.
She has in her possession his 1815 Waterloo Medal which has been passed down through the generations of the Mayne family. She would very much like to try and establish how she is related to him and to find out about his military career.
I understand that military records may give details of birth and parents, as well as service career.
Any help in tracing Richard's birth and military record would be very much appreciated.

Apart from his entry on the Waterloo Roll in 1809, I cannot any find other reference to him. There is nothing showing up in the National Archives.

Unfortunately records that early are unlikely to show any family information, and they were most likely to have been destroyed if he died in service.

Many thanks for searching Jebber. It may prove to be a rather difficult task in finding anything about him!

Yes, early records are very sparse. I have had no luck with my own early Army records, some Naval ones seem easier to locate.

Per his obituary in Saunders's News-Letter of 15 December 1827 (reprinted from the Canterbury Gazette of 6 December):

- He was aged 39
- Had served in 6 actions in the Peninsular War as well as at Waterloo
= Since then he'd served 9 years in the East Indies
- He'd served 18 years as a Lieutenant*
- He'd landed at Deal from India 3 weeks before his death and had been invalided home but was too exhausted to travel to his native place (Dublin)

*ironically he seems to have been promoted to Captain shortly before his death but it wasn't gazetted until the following year

Yes, could well be. I will mention this to my friend and possibly recommend she orders a copy of it from the Nstional Archives. Thanks for your continuing efforts Shaun.
