Clement Hems, transported to Tasmania 1821

Hi. Seeking to supplement my knowledge of Clement Hems, born 1784, Kings Norton to William and Mary Hems. Married Ann Bassett 1804, Birmingham. They had 3 children that I know of:-Thomas, Mary Ann and Ann. Wife Ann died 1818, Erdington, Birmingham. In 1821 Clement was convicted of receiving stolen goods and transported to Tasmania, with a 14 year sentence-harsh!! I know that he was a free man in 1836 as he arrived in Launceston on a Brig sailing from Sydney. From that point I am unable to trace Clement and would love to know if he had any more family, what he did, and where he died.

Any replies gratefully received.

His convict conduct record includes '4 children at Hardington(?) Parish'

Hi Matthew, so good to hear from you and such a quick response. Thank you very much. This was absolutely fascinating. I've been searching for this relative for years, so am tickled pink to learn about his life as a convict. Very harsh.

I wonder if he stayed in Australia or moved on?

You stated he arrived in Launceston in 1836.
Is that  Lanceston in Cornwall, England or another namesake location?
We ask so that we know where to (initially at least) concentrate any searches.

Hi Pauline. Lovely to hear from you. Clemant arrived in Launceston Australia from Sydney. By then he must have "done his time" but I wonder what he made of himself after that.

He seems to disappear from the Australian records, as far as I can see, which, along with the arrival records, hints that he may be working as crew on ships. He may have made his way back home or to another country.

I suggest that you ask sarah to move this to the Australia board so that others here can check their resources
