Got to be a mistake or what does it mean?

I got a photo of a grave for Charles Brookshaw who was born in 1840 and died in 1906 aged 66.

That is mentioned on the headstone but just under his name it says 'Late RN Crimea 1835' and I am stumped to what that could mean...

Any ideas please?

Error - on behalf of the stone mason?. Should it be 1853, which if it was, then I would say he was in the Royal Navy at 13 years old and was at the Crimea when the war started?.

I had a similar stone mason error on one of my rare ancestral MIs .She is down as dying at 86 when she was really 68. It would have meant that she would have been in her mid 60s when her last two children were born!

I thought that but decided he would be too young and he is at home in 1861.
However, after reading your thoughts, Llwyd, I looked him up.
This one, although there is only one in Cuckfield, has an earlier birthdate

So it looks like he lied about his age, that would make sense as it happened in other wars as well.

Yes the stone mason has got the actual year wrong.

Just downloaded the record on National Archives as it is free at the moment.

The 3 from the 1835 looks as though it could have worn away, and was originally a 5.
