Not unheard of - I had an aunt who I knew as Aunty Polly - she was actually Mary.

Same here BumbleB my grandmothers sister was Mary Jane and she was always referred to by my father as Aunt Polly  :)

Do you think then that Mary Ann Prior HEMMINGS is Polly PRIOR from 1891 census with her Aunt Letitia Prior ?
[/quote]

Yes I do. I remember my mum mentioning that she heard the name Polly when she was young and I made a note of it, but she couldn't remember who it was.

I now believe Polly/Patty was Mary Ann, her grandmother who was alive at the time and have deleted her from the tree.

Thanks for the help....again :)

What do you make of this?

I made a record of it way back!

Mary Ann Prior
Record Type Banns (Bann)Marriage Banns
Date 11 Oct 1896
Marriage Banns Place Saint Paul, Hammersmith and Fulham, England
Spouse William Henry Prior

There is no evidence of a marriage taking place and anyway the person that she alleges she married, mentioned on her death certificate as husband, later dismissed by Dorothy Mary and A Seward (Alice Amelia) was HENRY EDWARD PRIOR!

This is why her daughter Dorothy Mary believed all her life that her maiden name was Prior.

Another weird 'coincidence'.

Dorothy Mary's husband was HENRY EDWARD WINTER!!!!

Hello. Interested you're looking at this strand of Priors. My paternal Great Grandmother was Kate Constance Prior  b.1872 daughter of Joseph and Harriet. She met my Great Grandfather Samuel Johnson, a Coldstream Guard whilst a nanny in Kensington. He was from Sheffield and that is where they married and settled and had a family. I am from Sheffield but love in London. I haven't started to seriously trace my family yet but would be very happy to do so whilst helping or being helped by distant cousins. All the best, Richard.
