Walter Withers b1854
« on: Thursday 22 July 21 07:43 BST (UK) »
1861 Census
Checking my facts here. Walter's father was Edwin Withers, rope manufacturer or rope twister. His mother Sarah Welch. Looking for the occupation of Walter in the 1861 Census. He was, I think, a clerk in his father's factory, but would like to be sure.
Thank you

If Walter was born 1854 he would only have been around 7 years old in 1861

It is possible that in 1861, age 7, he was a scholar, and possibly at Sutton Coldfield.
Would you mind verifying?

In 1871, an apprentice rope twister is consistent.

Walter H must be William on that FS link.
Image on ancestry confirms Walter

No more free 1841 and 1861 census images on FamilySearch? :(

That is most helpful - His full name was Walter Herbert
The 1861 reference to Park Road Handsworth is curious. In the 1881 Census the family lives in Park Avenue by the Vicarage ave. There must have been a number of Park street, avenue, road etc.
Thanks again

Sorry folks  ??? Have totally failed to find the references you kindly supplied.
Neither Ancestry, FindMyPast, FS nor FreeCen have obliged with any of the names you found - Wilkins or Waltons.
Thanks for the link to FS - yes that's fine, but as you say no free image.

Ditto for 1871: no sign of Withers, Waltons, Wilkins. The only Edwin was Edwin POOLE age 67 of Brm. No Walter willing to put up their hands.

Could you supply the

Household ID
Line Number
Page Number
Piece/Folio
Registration Number
Enumeration District
Ecclesiastical District
Civil Parish

when you do find them? Much obliged

That’s strange. I just used Ancestry and entered the above reference and it is there.
