HMS Delight (Portland 1940)
«
on:
Tuesday 30 August 05 20:06 BST (UK) »
My Great Uncle was serving on the Destroyer
HMS Delight when it was bombed and sank
off Portland on 29th July 1940.
He later died off his injuries at Victory (Portsmouth)
I have just tried surfing the net for a picture
of the HMS Delight, but I cannot find the one
from this date.
There must be a photo in existence of this Ship
Any one know where?
Also does any one know anything about this
sea battle. I have found snippets on the net
(i.e. A couple of sentences).
Any where I can find out about the battle in
depth.
Jinks
PS I have the gentlemans service record my
Father sent for it about twenty five years ago.

hiya jinks, for a picture,go to these two sites
www.rjerrard.co.uk/royalnavy/daring/daring.htm
www.hmscavalier.org.uk/d119
if you are more adventurous, you could get in touch with blue turtle dive charters, and you can dive on the wreck yourself, they are on the net, based in devon.
hms delight was attacked and set on fire while escorting a convoy, she made it back to port, but sank in portland the following day,she was a D class destroyer, mack

Thanks Manmack
I have just checked out the sites,
I had found a picture of a HMS Delight
here,
www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk
But this suggested it was not the right one,
Do ships with the same name look the same?

Thanks Manmack,
I thought it looked the same but on the web site
it was credited to another ship broken up in the 1950s
Thanks
I told my father about diving down to see the ship
and he thought I meant by submarine!!!
He was all for it, but I think you probably mean
with a tank and flippers (dont you?).

The photo posted by jinks is of the Daring Class destroyer HMS Delight, launched 1950. I have attached a photo HMS Delight which was sunk off Portland Bill in 1940.
