You mentioned "Several published trees have Thomas Gough and Elizabeth McKenna as parents".  Can you give me the links to these trees? Also would PRONI have any info on the birth or marriage of the parents?

If you have Ancestry, you can easily find them by searching for John McGough with those parents.
There are about 16 trees in all.

Thank you.  I do not have ancestry but do any of these sites have the Ireland branch of the family or are they all in Canada?

No they are all the Canadian.
The references to the parents have no records.
However, on the one I linked, the parents names seem to have been taken from a marriage record.

I have a Rose McGough; b. 1826, Seatown, Dundalk, Co Louth, IRL.
She had a twin; Thomas. I have a Patrick McGough and Ann McDonnell as parents.
Rose married Thomas Campbell and emigrated to Geneva, NY USA.

This thread (on the ANTRIM board) applies to a family from Belfast. You'd be better off making a separate post on the LOUTH board.
However, you should first check the online R.C. Parish Records (free) for Dundalk (although you haven't actually given the family's religion).
