Marriage of John Ferris to Deborah
« on: Wednesday 14 July 21 23:06 BST (UK) »
Struggling to find a marriage for Deborah and John.
She died 12th Oct 1902 age 68. She was married to John Ferris and this is them living in 1901 census.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Ballyscolly/Ballylackey/997981/

I realise her age is not correct either on the census or death certificate, but this is the couple whom I seek the marriage of.

I believe they were native to NORTHERN IRELAND.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Family Search has the following baptism of children of John and Deborah Ferris of Aghalee, co Antrim.
William John 11 Mar 1849, Joseph 25 Aug 1850. Adam 31 Oct 1852, Thomas 25 Nov 1853.

If this is your couple, it suggests marriage circa 1847/8

Assuming they were married in Church of Ireland, you may be unlucky. Many of the registers were destroyed by fire during the Civil War in 1922

Thanks for that info. Much appreciated..

This is more info that I have going back to John and Deborah.
Eliza Jane Ferris married Isaac Ellis in 1895. Her father was John Ferris on the marriage certificate.

I couldn’t find a marriage for John, and looked for a death of his wife, and found a record of death of Deborah Ferris on 12th Oct 1902 of Deborah Ferris age 68.. John Ferris is mentioned as the widower, present at death.

Isaac Ellis and Eliza Jane Ferris had a daughter Deborah born 24th Feb 1898, which makes me think that this all ties together.

The 1851 census fragments have a lot of Ferris’s which I can’t tie into this family for certain.

In 1908, John was embroiled as defendant in a court case, brought against him by a widow in her 40s, that he had apparently 'promised to marry and leave his farm etc' to. It seems his sons-in-law had stepped in once John had gone to the registrar and had his and the woman's names 'put up' , to persuade him not to proceed to actual marriage. The court described John as being 80yrs old, whilst the plaintiff had believed him to be 73.

The Lisburn Standard of 17th October 1908, has the full story.

Thanks scotmum. I’ve been away from genealogy for 15 years and a bit rusty.
I believe you helped me find a marriage of a couple from ballinderry who got married in Glasgow.

Do you have a link to the article in the Lisburn newspaper?
There was also a disputed will of an Isaac Ellis who died about 1909 in the area I would love to know the details of, see this link : http://glenavyhistory.com/townlands/townlands-ballinderry-parish/loughrelisk-townland-ballinderry-parish/

Struggling to find a marriage for Deborah and John.
...
I believe they were native to NORTHERN IRELAND.
1901 census says both born in County Antrim. If you can't find their marriage in civil registrations it possible they married before 1845.

An Isaac Ellis died 1909 age 54- informant was Eliza Jane Ellis widow-

This looks like his family-

here they are in 1901-

Can't see a Sarah Catherine in either census in the area.

The Will case also mentions a Mary Louise & Richard Augustus Ellis. This couple?
