My great great grandfather was George Hart Hughes. He was an artist who was born in Gorey, Wexford in circa 1839 and emigrated to Montreal, Quebec where he married Margaret Whitty. He died in 1921. I would appreciate any information on his Irish family pre 1840's
Unfortunately 1839 is before the start of the Gorey Catholic parish registers in 1845, so little chance of finding his baptism.
The second name of Hart suggests that his mother's family may have been Hart, and there were Hart families in the area.
As pointed out by Heywood, the Canadian census in 1871 shows him as Catholic, and Whitty is also a Wexford Catholic name. Do you have a civil or parish record of the marriage in Canada? Does it give information on parents and religion, or at least the father's names and occupation?
