Very very long shot! I am scripting the Will of Isaac Veal (Brewer) dated 1869 who died in Ringwood in 1872- in which he left '3 cottages purchased from John Bessant Veal and Mr Metcalf.

Is there any way at all that I can find out where these cottages were?

I am wondering if there is reference to properties or land owned by these 2 gentlemen in the Tithes and apportionment records? Would really welcome some starting points please!

Many thanks
Caroline

It's worth searching the internet for "John Bessant Veal".  It looks like he lived in Sussex (unless there was another man of the same name.

There is an entry in The Gazette 8 December 1857 which mentions Nott, Metcalf & the creditors of John Veal Bessant late of Ringmer, Sussex.

Thank you all- I have found John Bessant Veale listed in Kellys 1855 for Ringmer- one of the Gentry. And it seems that Ann Veal married James Metcalf in 1823 so that is where the Metcalf link comes in. I am just curious as to the three cottages to which Isaac Veal refers to in his will as having purchased them from John Bessant Veal and Mrs Metcalf. Mrs Metcalf was widowed by 1851 and Isaac's will is dated 1869- was Mrs Metcalf selling on behalf of her late husband James Metcalf who possibly died in Ely in 1850- same sort of area as John B Veal was operating in around that time- just a thought. However his widow Ann Metcalf is back in Ringwood as a a Widow in 1851. Random thoughts but I guess there must be maps showing who owned what land/premises in Ringwood around 1845 which may be a good starting point. Maybe the Apportionment/Tithe maps?

The Sussex Advertiser, 16 Aug 1853, reported the sale of John Bessant Veal's Broomham Farm Estate - Parishes of Ripe and Laughton, Sussex.
It mentions 2 cottages comprising part of the estate (presumably sold as such) but then refers to " ...; Also, at the same time will be sold separately a newly erected cottage adjoining the estate...".

Thank you- yes I found that but I am curious about 3 cottages that Isaac Veal bought from John Bessant Veal and Mrs metcalf in Ringwood. Isaac Veal made his Will in 1869 and Mrs metcalf was a widow by 1851 so it seems that is the sort of time window I am looking at- but just wondered if the 1845 maps of Ringwood would show land or properties owned by John Bessant Veal- just a thought.

John Bessant VEAL was at Ryderswells, South Malling, and then Park Gate, Ringmer, because he had married the daughter of Rev John LUPTON, Rector of Cliffe (Lewes) and curate of Ringmef (who lived at Ringmer Vicarage).
