The surname Stockwell Green
« on: Wednesday 07 July 21 16:18 BST (UK) »
This is really a put it out there and see post.
My great grandfather was Charles Green, who also went by the name of Charles Stockwell Green and Charles Green Stockwell.
It would appear that in the early 1800's Charles Stockwell married Ann Green and the children then started to appear with two surnames not hyphenated which were often reversed.
Is anyone else looking at the Stockwell Greens or Green Stockwells?
Cheers.
Lant;Hunt;Richardson;Holyland;Thorneloe.

Thanks CaroleW, the tree on Family Search was compiled by my cousin who is a LDS church member based on my information which was edited for ease of understanding. The surname has caused a lot of research to prove.

Charles Stockwell & Ann Green married 1841 Nuneaton.  He was a widower & she was a spinster - father Edward

In 1851 Ann is with father Edward shown as Green & looks like status is widow but not sure.  3 children all surname Green but daughter Sophia was b 1833 - illegitimate

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JWZQ-6CM

Youngest 2 were registered as Stockwell - mmn Green -  Catherine 1842 and Eliza Jane 1847.

Ann was b 1816

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NG17-FTL

IF - she was a widow in 1851 then Charles jnr was illegitimate

I can't find a death for Charles before 1851 in Warwickshire.  He was a brazier on the 1841 marriage cert & aged 30 occ tin plate worker on the 1841 census

Is there something strange about the 1851 census entry?

Edward Green - aged 61
Ann Green - aged 55 - widow - daughter
 :-\ :-\

Added:  and youngest granddaughter is aged 4  :-\
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Although it’s a very clear 55 I think it should be 35.

I think Charles birth cert could be interesting.  If he was illegit - it would account for the variation in the surname.  His first marriage was as Green but his second was as Stockwell

His death cert was Charles Green Stockwell formerly Green.

Anyway thanks for the help its much appreciated.
