Britain was at war with France in 1807. Where was William then?
Yes, sorry.
And in transcribing I have realised he did not die in 1817 I had miscounted the rows, he was actually discharged in 1814!
Uk Regimental Registers of Service 1756-1900 on Ancestry.co.uk:
Record of Non commissioned Officers, Drummers & Privates of 23rd Regiment of HM Royal Welch Fuzileers.
The record transcribes as:
William Johncey
Size 5ft 5 1/2 inches
Age 26
Complexion Fresh
Visage Round?
Eyes Hazel
Hair Dark
Where Born - County Gloucester, Parish Amp(l)ney
Occupation Labourer
Attestation 16th Oct 1807
Discharged 30 Oct 1814 (So he missed Waterloo!)
I was looking for an ancestor who married in 1815 and thought I could discount this one as dead but turns out he could well be a possible match after all. So thank you for making me look harder.
