I found an intriguing military record for William Johncey while researching the Johnsey surname in Gloucestershire. I can’t find either a baptism or burial record to match this person yet (closest date match is baptism in Coberley). Also I don’t think Amplney exists. Does anyone know anything about the 23rd Regiment of the Royal Welch Fusiliers and what they would have been doing in 1807, how he would have joined and why he might have been discharged in 1814?

Amplney may not exist but Ampney does and lies some 14 miles south east of Coberley.
In 1807, the 1st Battalion Royal Welch were at the Battle of Copenhagen

Yes, sorry.
And in transcribing I have realised he did not die in 1817 I had miscounted the rows, he was actually discharged in 1814!

I am not completely sure about the Coberley baptism as the entry is for a William, son of James & Mary Johnsy Ribbins. So to my mind that makes him William Ribbins with mother’s maiden or family name possibly Johnsy. However it has been transcribed as baptism of William Johnsy.
