Hi
I have had a quick look at all the census records from 1861 for Richard and his place of birth varies between Ticehurst, Flimwell and Goudhurst in Kent but the birth year stays constant.  Have you got his marriage certificate?   That will confirm his father's name at least.  In 1881 he has a step daughter called Mary Price so it looks as if he married a widow called Elizabeth Price.  However he also has children called Richard and Sarah and in the 1871 census they are not with him but are with his parents.
RG10 951 F21 p11   Goudhurst
Samuel Golding Hd 61 ag lab b Goudhurst
Sarah wi 62 b Biddenden
Elizabeth da in law 44 b Farnham
Richard g son  4 b Bromley
Sarah g da 2 b Goudhurst

That was a stroke of luck!   How sad that he ends up in the workhouse by 1901.

Whippeeeeeeeeeeeee

This confirms what I have been struggling with for so long!

My GGGrandfather actually was the youngest of 5 boys!!

Now I will try and sort out the rest of the family and put them together with the splattered information I have.

Thank-you thankyou sooooooooo much.

Hi Jillian 1

Glad you liked that info, hope it now enables you to sort out your other ancestors.

Earlier census for Ticehurst (copies kept in the Parish Chest) show that the name GOLDING first appeared in the 1811 census:

James Golding, Bejamin Cooper and ? Johnson shared a house in which were
3 Families, consisting of 8 males and 7 females.

(sorry about it just being statistics, but up to 1841 it was the same everywhere)

Hi, I wondered if you had come across another Samuel Golding in Goudhurst b 1806 with a wife Caroline and children Elizabeth, Jane, Samuel, Harriett, Mark, William, Caroline, Luke, Martha, John, James and Ann.
I had previously thought Jillians one was mine but now I think its this one and I dont have much info

I see that it is a member submiited entry on the IGI so it needs to be treated with caution and you should check all the original sources.  Several of the children listed there are born after 1837 so you should be able to look for their births in the GRO index.  That is free to search on www.ancestry.co.uk - choose the complete BMD version. In 1851 they are in Goudhurst HO107 1619 F314 p18 and the youngest child, Ann, is 11 months so you should be able to get her birth certificate easily.
What do you know as fact about your family?   I always find it easier to work back from known facts so if you can quote a census or certificate details with a proven family member on it we might be able to see which line they come from more easily.

Well, I know that I have them in the 1841.. without Jane who is in service nearby, she is my 2nd gt grandmother. So I have nothing to ACTUALLY tie Jane b 1828 to this family, rather than the other Samuel Golding family that Jillian was researching.
As far as I am aware though, there were only two Goudhurst families with Samuel Golding as HoH around this date and I plumped for the Samuel/ Caroline one as Janes daughter b 1859 was Jane Caroline.
I know Jane was born in Goudhurst and that her father was Samuel and a Gardener, which is true of the Samuel of the Samuel/ Caroline family. I also am sure she had a brother named Luke which also tips her into this family.
I was wondering if anyone had seen baptismal records that might confirm Jane belonging to this family as 1841 is too late and she has already left home. It would also be nice to know Caroline's maiden name....
I must say I haven't come across either of these two families on the IGI, I've been going by census, but I'll go and look again for those submitted records you mentioned
