Would it not be easier to contact the newspaper?

Just a thought  :)

Sorry if this sounds a stupid question but which newspaper?

If your friend is not a member of the direct family, there may be others still around. There may be people in the area who remember Daniel’s musical career, even though it is not referred to very much in the obituary.
Newspapers often run short articles/notices when people are searching.

The choir might have archives too

Thank you very much for those links/suggestions. I'll go take a look.
Waddicor, Poyser, Wildgoose, Cartwright and especially anyone who can enlighten me on a Daniel Cairney who was born around 1929 in Tranent, East Lothian. Apparently he was some kind of famous music hall musician or singer/entertainer but can't find mention of him anywhere! :(

Reply #24 This seems like a different enquiry for another time.

Thank you. Yes you're right. I'll start a new thread about his wife later. For now I have 2 suggested links to take a look at.

Indeed so, although no mention/list of gigs/performances or past notable singers etc. When I get time, I'll have to contact them and ask.

Just to add that Daniel Cairney may well have sung 'many times at Blackpool' but rather than individually (and advertised as such), as part of a choir or the chorus in an operatic work, and therefore investigating the choirs/companies he sang in may well be a better angle to take.

Programmes do usually have lists of the choir/chorus members and their archives may help here.

Speaking personally, I've 'performed at the Albert Hall' but you won't find my name in any newspapers about that!

Hello Igor

yes the idea that he was probably a chorister rather than an individual performer is looking more likely, as you rightly say. I also agree that approaching that choral choir mentioned in the obiturary is probably the  way forward, as you suggest so I'll have to try to find a contact on that website link. And yes, your final point is well taken. :)

I was contacted by the John Muir Trust as they believe you (Manchurian Nick) are looking for information about my father, Dan Cairney.
If you could contact me privately I may be able to help.

Welcome to RootsChat, Kathleen. You and Nick will be able to exchange private messages when you have made a few more posts. Then your private message function will work. Replying to this will count towards your post total.
Your father's involvement in the John Muir Trust interested me. I live in Scotland and have done environmental work as a volunteer and have heard of the John Muir Trust.

Wow hello Kathleen. Welcome to RootsChat and thank you SO much for writing. It's lovely to hear from you and yes I am interested to learn more about your father, especially with regard to his singing career. As you'll know if you've read through all the other posts here, I've heard he had sung in Blackpool, amongst other places but have still to discover if that was as part of a choir or something he did on his own? Also trying to find out more about your wider family, as it were, as part of my genealogy research on behalf of a friend of mine who is in contact with another member of the family, although I don't know a name or his relationship to Dan but I will try to find out.

Yes do please reply to this, too. As soon as I'm able I'd be happy to chat by private message here or, alternatively, which would be better for me if you're happy to do so, by email?

I look forward to hear from you again soon.

All the best for now, Nick
