Hey everybody.  After a period of time away from ancestry, I've decided to start again.  I've tried in the past to find marriage details for my 6x Great Grandparents (I have their children's info) and would really like to find records for their parents (esp the McDougall line).  The last time I'd look I'd come to a grinding halt & appeared to have exhausted the online info.  Neil was born in 1734 in Glasgow & Florence in 1738.

I'd be extremely appreciative if somebody can point me in the right direction to unlock this puzzle.

Are these their children?

I do not see any birth records for Neil or Florence or their marriage on SP?
How sure are you on the dates?

Neil McDougall does not appear in the burgess roll for Glasgow, so no help there.

Hi Colin & GR,

Yes that is their children, TBH I cannot remember exactly how I got to Neil & Florence's years of birth (I think it might have been from a census sheet though).  I did read on their son John McDougall's baptism record from 1766 that they are "of Port Glasgow".  It does show Florence as his spouse, even though she is still recorded as McPherson. I also states "had a lawful son".  So I have assumed from that they are married?   - I'm not sure now where to go to dig deeper :(

Yes. That's quite normal. A woman in Scotland does not lose her own surname on marriage, and is often listed in subsequent records by her maiden name.

This is why Scottish baptism records, when they name the mother, usually give her maiden surname, and why deaths of married women are indexed under both their own surname and the surnames of any husbands.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I have now found the extra child that you mention.

JOHN MCDOUGALL
NIEL MCDOUGALL/FLORENCE MCPHERSON
02/03/1766 Port Glasgow.

I think it is unlikely that Neil & Florence appeared on any census return, unless they were more than
100 years old when they died.

Hi, I did find these two deaths on SP either of which may belong to you.
Death:
Flora Mcpherson  age 45.d 5 May 1803
    Glasgow
Flora Mcpherson.age 66 D 30 March 1802 Glasgow

Also found:
Marriage:
Neil McDougall & Flora Bell married 17 May 1850.Could Flora/Florence have been married prior to Neil McDougal????
