Ridge family in Heage 1600 -1800
« on: Tuesday 01 June 21 15:21 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information about the Ridge family in Heage especially Martha Ridge born c1700. She married Abraham Harrison in 1743 and then Thomas Litchfield in 1754. I have discounted the Martha Ridge born in Mackworth c1724, a daughter of Rafe Ridge, as I have found her burial in Mackworth.

Martha is mentioned in 2 wills

1749 Thomas Ridge names a daughter named Martha Harrrison and a son named David Ridge and other children.

1784 David Ridge mentions his sister Martha wife of Abraham Harrison

1702 Edward Ridge of Pentrich mentions a cousin named Thomas

Edward  Ridge appears to have been employed as a servant employed by Charles Pool at Heage Hall and appeared to have stolen the gold belonging to Charles Pool when he died suddenly.
Edward then bought several properties in Heage before moving to Pentrich.

The Ridge family appear to have been very involved with the dissenting religion in Heage/Belper.

I am struggling to find any baptism or marriage records for the Ridge family and any help will be appreciated.

Thanks for reading this

The marriage of Martha Harrison and Thomas Lichfield was by Licence.  The image of the Bond is available on FindMyPast.  Both parties are of the Parish of Duffield.  This is aged 36 and Martha is a widow aged 34.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Not sure whether it is inferred that Martha is alive or dead at the time of David Ridge's will -

"Also I give and bequeath to such of the children of my sister Martha Lichfield as she had by Abram Harrison ....."

Hi,

May I offer the following

Thomas Ridge Snr, of Heage buried Duffield 27.8.1717 died intestate, his administration is on FindMyPast,
his estate was administered by his son Thomas Ridge. Thomas Snr married 3.2.1673/4 Hannah Beardmore.  Suggest that Thomas Snr., is the one recorded in the will of Edward Ridge as Cousin.

Thomas Ridge Jnr., (can find no bpt) marries 18.7.1699 Duffield Martha Watkinson of Lee Parish of Ashover, he dies 1749.
A son is bpt Duffield 12.2.1700/1 Duffield, as Thomas son of Thomas & Martha Ridge Jnr., of Heage.
From his will 1749 the other children
Hannah = Bowmer
John
David =21.11.1754 Duffield Grace Wolley
Edward bpt. 13.1.1705/6 Duffield
?  = John Hogg possible marriage is 27.12.1731 Crich, the bride is only recorded as Mary of Duffield Parish. So big assumption
Martha = Abraham Harrison 1743 the ages given in marriage licence is Abraham 30 Martha 24, so
   Born at 1719.

Abraham Harrison was a Nailor, the Harrisons becoming Nail Masters in Belper owning and building houses - lots of history re this family.

Derby Mercury 10.4.1788
On April 3rd 1788 the co-partnership between David Ridge of Heage and Abraham Harrison of Belper
both of the County of Derby, Nail Factors was finally dissolved by mutual consent.  Etc etc., from FindMyPast.

Suggest this is David Ridge, brother of  Martha, Abraham Harrison being her son.

Also note that Abraham Harrison, husband of Martha Ridge died intestate and David Ridge assisted in the administration of his estate.  Administration on FindMyPast.

Thank you so much for your help.

I will try to look through everything this weekend and try to make some sense of it all!

I think that it looks as if my 'Ridge' family will turn out to be one of my many 'dead ends' as I seem to be unable to find the baptisms for Edward and Thomas but I will keep trying,

Thank you both again. Any help is very much appreciated.

Hi,

The Parish Registers for Duffield are difficult this early, Heage and Belper were Chapelries of Duffield.
Only baptisms and burials took place with all marriages taking place at Duffield.

I have this vision of Baptisms and burials being written on scraps of paper, many being lost before they arrived in Duffield to be entered in the Registers.

In early Registers Belper and Heage B & B are recorded separately in the Duffield Registers.

Have you considered that Ridge may infact be Ridg, sure you have.

Giving you connections, via Ancestry,

17.5.1625
Buried. An wife of John Ridge of Heage

4.11.1628  Edward Ridg = An Campion of Heage were married

The next is a bpt., notice the heading Belper & Heage

24.12.1632
William ye son of Godfrey Ridg of Heage was baptised

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/61407/images/rs00013341_4452018-00494?treeid=&personid=&hintid=&queryId=17a1ab572f4c43a61539db9b146c45a9&usePUB=true&_phsrc=uEE5&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&_ga=2.101558145.1624831615.1622743076-1089502786.1620647806&pId=4522208

So there were families named Ridge/Ridg all of Heage in early 1600’s

Hi Spendlove

Thanks again for all the information.

I am in the process of documenting the baptism, marriages and burials of the Ridge family in Heage and Duffield along with marriage licences and wills so that is keeping me busy. Now all I have to do is to try and sort them into families which is proving to be easier said than done but no one ever said that family research was easy did they? But it is reassuring to know that there is evidence of the family being in Heage in the 1600s.

Thank you again for all your help
