								Kate, I think that sounds quite plausible that there was just a misunderstanding about maiden name.  
I can imagine it might have felt a bit stressful having to go into an 'official' environment and give information at that time and mistakes might have been more commonplace.  I think  many of the population were illiterate back then too and probably anything to do with officialdom might have felt more daunting experience for many.
