The name David repeats across generations and cousins which doesnt help matters.  Many tree's have this David buried in 1821 bit I think he may be a cousin David which I cannot find a baptism for, s/of David and Elizabeth.

There is a baptism of a David on 23 Sep 1759 at Willisham,  s/o David and Elizabeth, but that's about 13 miles away.

added
but close to Barking where a David married Elizabeth Fisher

Now 'Goat' is given name I have not come across in my many years.  Thank you for that.

There are a number of people with the surname Goat around Wetheringsett, but haven't found any actually in the village. There is also a burial of a Goat Sheppard at W'sett on 05 Aug 1766. No age given, but note says single, so I think he would be an adult. There is a baptism of a Goat Sheppard in Thorndon on 03 Oct 1736 s/o John and Mary. May be a connection.

Hi folks

 ...
James HOWLETT
bp: 01 Sep 1776, Archdeaconry of Sudbury s/of Francis HOWLETT and Mary.

On the 1851 he said he was born at Woolpit, a fair distance from Sudbury.

James married Mary SHIPPEN at Wetheringsett on 04 Apr 1797.

Mary SHIPPON
bp: 06 Feb 1774, Sudbury d/of David SHIPPON and Elizabeth.

On the 1851 she said she was born at Wetheringsett, also a fair distance from Sudbury.

Their children are baptised at Woolpit between 1797 and 1815.

I am stuck with anything further on the SHIPPON / SKIPPEN, etc family.  Could if be the many spellings of the name?!  Also Sudbury, why be baptised so far from home and not just one family?!

Thanks,

bitzar.

EDIT: James' siblings I have found some baptised at Sudbury and some at Woolpit.

Re children baptised at Woolpit ...

Possibly the father? ...

I can't find a Marriage image on 2 Subs'n sites.

One site has decided her name was Shippen and the other Skippen.

Present at Marriage as Witnesses?
Who were the two present at the 1797 Marriage as witnesses and was the marriage by Banns or Licence?

If one was under age and if by Licence, a parent may be noted on the Marriage Allegation and Bond (for a Licence), sometimes his/ her place of residence.

Some Licences confirm if Widower / Widow and sometimes their status was not always stated in the Parish Marriage Register (I once came across a Marriage Licence with the Widow remarrying at 19).

Witnesses at a Marriage
Usually are:-
Relatives or
Church staff
Sometimes Neighbours,
someone from their own Church,  (Congregation or Meeting if Nonconformist)
or Work Colleagues

Or even a mix of the above.

ADDED

Some Howlett in the military born Woolpit (various dates and ages, from a search 1750 to 1880, covering 1800 to 1899)

Don't know if this might help your tree or even if related or not (from a "Howlett Blacksmith" search) ...

Lizzie, the second Wm I found baptised 20 Mar 1761 and buried 1763.  I believe there were two more... very sad.

The David baptism is a great find.  His siblings (probable) Goat and Mary mentioned earlier baptised 1770 and 1774 at Wetheringsett.

I've just looked up the buried of Goate Shippard, single man that you noted.  At what age would you be noted as a man?!  How long is a piece of string?

Mark,  appreciate your input.  The Howlett's had been Blacksmith's for many generations.  It was the son of this James, William Thomas and his family who arrived into Australia in 1852.  He was also a Blacksmith along with his sons.  Wm being my x3 gr grandfather.  The burial you mentioned at Crowlands is a daughter of this William.

Marriage:  I've only seen a transcription of the 04 Apr 1797 marriage of James Howlett and Mary Skippen.  Witnesses: James QUINTON, Susan GARLAND.  I'm not familiar with these names.

I will also check your suggesting's at the national achives.  I def have Francis Howlett's born Woolpit.

Many thanks,

bitzar.

There did not appear to be a Marriage Licence application listed for the 1797 marriage in the following:-

The Harleian Society's copies of the Sudbury Archdeaconry marriage licence allegations are also available from the Internet Archive. I've added hyperlinks for these volume numbers:

Vol. 69 - Part 1: 1684-1754
Vol. 70 - Part 2: 1755-1781 with index to parts 1 & 2
Vol. 71 - Part 3: 1782-1814
Vol. 72 - Part 4: 1815-1839 with index to parts 3 & 4

Brides are indexed under both maiden and married surnames but there is no Mary Shippen etc. and the only couple named James and Mary Howlet(t) in vol. 3 were to marry at Brome in 1793.

The Wetheringsett marriage register should state whether the 1797 wedding was authorised by a licence. It may have been issued by a surrogate of the Norwich Consistory Court. The NCC bonds and allegations can be browsed at FamilySearch.org or Findmypast. I don't know how many of them have been indexed.
