Caning His Wife
- Thomas Littleford
- Blenheim Road, Wood Green
- summoned by his wife for persistent cruelty
- and neglecting to provide reasonable maintenance for their two children
- complainant stated that on Oct 4th 1902, she was married
- and there had been two children
- on Aug 11th she asked for money, when defendant made abusive language,
- and struck her on the back with a cane and smacked her face
- on another occasion defendant knocked her down,
- rendering her unconscious
- he had also ill treated her so much that she had to obtain medical attention
- she was at last obliged to leave him
- with the exception of 2s she had received no money
- from defendant since Christmas
- she was now working at Barratt's Factory
- a witness, speaking as to the cruelty, said defendant
- has told her that his wife would receive 15 black eyes at his hands
- defendant called evidence to show that his mother had assisted her brother
- cross examined by Mr Avery [complainant's representative],
- a witness stated that defendant sometimes touched his wife with a cane
- in a playful way
- a separation order was granted,
- and complainant was allowed alimony of 10s per week

- and by arrangement the met one another so that he might pay her his money
- instead of giving her the money he gave her two black eyes,
- as he struck her two violent blows in the face
- defendant said is was exasperated,
- and promised not to offend again
- the defendant was bound over to keep the peace

- the woman said she was separated from her husband

- on Saturday night she met with him by arrangement
- in order that he might give her the money then due to her
- instead of doing so he struck her, and gave her tow black eyes
- defendant was bound over to keep the peace

- charged on a warrant with neglecting to pay
- the sum of 10s per week to his wife,
- the arrears amounting to £9 10s
- the prisoner said he was out of work
- his wife said he was in work when the warrant was issued
- and he was now living with another woman
- prisoner said that since he had "come out" he had done five days work
- and poisoned his hand
- the Magistrates sentenced the prisoner to a month's imprisonment
- but suspended the warrant for a month to give him an opportunity to pay

- under a separation order made against him.
- when arrested by P.s. Cowdrey, the prisoner said
- "I am very sorry. I only started work yesterday"
- The Bench sentenced him to 2 months imprisonment,
- but suspended the warrant for a month,
- to give him an opportunity to pay
