Census look-up 1851 help needed
« on: Monday 29 August 05 11:41 BST (UK) »
Please can someone help me with a look-up in the 1851 census for Langstone (Llangstone).

The household should be William Watkins (approx 37years) and Elizabeth Watkins with possibly a child Mary (a small infant born in 1851).

Thank you for any help anybody can give me with this request.

I have gone through the 1851 census twice for this family at Langstone and they are not there, which is strange because Mary was baptised on the 6 April 1851 and the 1851 census was taken on 31 March only 6 days before.

I expect you are trying to find the birthplace of Elizabeth, my suggestion would be to purchase the birth certificate for Mary so you have the Mothers maiden name, then find the marriage which must be around 1851 or just before. then where ever they married may give you some idea of where they were in 1851.

Regarding Mary Watkins the 1851 census says she was born Langstone so she must have been born after 31 March. This is all of a tight squeeze.

There is always the possibilty they are missed from the Langstone census. Come back to me if you have any other info. I have the 1851 census for nearly every county in the area.

Thanks for your prompt reply I really appreciate it.

Mary's sister Emma who appears on the 1861 census is my great grandmother,  I purchased her birth certificate and her mothers maiden name is Elizabeth Lewis.  I found what I thought might be the marriage in 1850 the certificate arrived but has left a lot more questions.

The marriage was at Newport Reg office 13th Dec 1850 and give the address of both parties as Banes Well Newport. Elizabeths father is Charles Lewis labourer and William's as Thomas Watkins Miller. Williams age is 28 which doesn't fit with any of the census returns.

The 1841 and 1861 census shows a Thomas Watkins miller born Llangstone in the area which would fit with Williams birth place and could suggest he is the correct person just marrying out of the village.

I hoped the 1851 census would help by confirming Elizabeths age and giving a clue of where she was born to locate her in 1841 so that I know if I have the correct marriage certificate.

Thanks once again for your help

Thomas Watkins married Elizabeth Edwards 19.8.1813 Langstone

If you have the correct marriage where could they have gone between December 1850 & March 31 1851

1841 census shows William Watkins alone at Coedcaira and Thomas Watkins and family at Cats Ash.  Both these returns come under the Langstone area.

I think William had left home and never lived with his parents again so he could have been living in a different Parish to them at the time of his marriage and the 1851 census.

Thomas Watkins was in Llantrissent 1861 and Caerleon in 1871 whilst William was in Langstone in the same house at these times.
