Hello everyone,

Can anyone advise on how to find further information about police constables (specifically in London, around 1850s/60s), based on their badge/collar number and surname?

An ancestor of mine, George John Augustus DEASON (b 1825 Poplar, London; d. 1908 Poplar, London) is listed as a police constable on some censuses/baptism records etc (he seems to have had various occupations at other times though - including Gate Keeper, Timekeeper Man, Seaman, Bricklayer, General Labourer, Clerk, etc.)

I've found some newspaper articles from between 1857-1862 in Clerkenwell (London) about a Constable Deason, and would like to find out if this is 'my' George J A Deason.

The Constable Deason in the articles has an identifier of 244G; is there a way to find out more information about the person with that identifier (e.g. police archives? any other archives?)

Many thanks in advance for any help or insight!

Living in Clerkenwell he was possibly City of London Police. There are some records at LMA.

He may have been in the Met (rather than City of London Police). His number 244G implies Finsbury district (Metropolitan Police).

Thanks so much everyone - I've found him!

Date of Appointment: 23 April 1855
Name: George John Augustus Deason
Warrant number: 33565
Dismissed: 31 [?] Aug [?] 1866

Hopefully his warrant number will now lead me to more information, including why he was dismissed...
