ADAM Robert
« on: Monday 29 August 05 09:15 BST (UK) »
I'm having trouble finding my great-great-grandfather's records.  He was Robert Gibson ADAM, and lived in Kilbarchan.  He was born about 1843 and died 1908.  He married Mary Morning/Murey on 12 June 1863.  The marriage entry gives his parents as Thomas Adam & Elizabeth Gibson, but elsewhere I find his parents as David Adam & Maggie Gibson.  I can't find a birth record for him at the SRO.  Anyone have any ideas where I can look? (Not much on the LDS site either).   At the time of his marriage he was a Private in the Renfrew Militia.

Hi

In 1881 census for Paislry High Church, there is :
Robert Adam - aged 38 years - born @ Paisley - occupation worsted weaver.
Mary Adam - aged 37 years - born @ Johnston - occupation housekeeper.
and their seven children.

The above would "fit" for his year of birth and occupation at time of death in 1908

Thenks for the census info.  This is getting more confusing.  I found Robert Adam's death certificate.  Same wife, MS Morning.  This time his parents are David Adam & Maggie Gibson.  Robert's son was the informant, maybe he made a guess?  I have found a marriage for David Adam & Elizabeth Gibson in 1823 - wonder if that's the same couple?

Hi

Both SP and IGI have a marriage between a Robert Adam and a Mary Murey/Murray in June 1863 @ Johnston/Paisley Renfrewshire.

Re the information on 1908 death certificate - if son got both mothers' maiden name and fathers' age at death wrong, maybe and I repeat maybe, he was also incorrect with fathers' parents........

Hi

Checked SP - although there were many "combinations" of Adam and Gibson (all counties, 1800-1854) especially around the Paisley area, there were no :

Thomas Adam/Elizabeth Gibson or David Adam/Maggie Gibson

I'm going with the info on the marriage entry - I would hope the bride & groom would know their own ages & parents names - unless there are some skeletons in my family cupboards!  I've found all sorts of strange details given by informants - I'm sure most of the time they made a guess.  Still can't find Robert, I'm beginning to believe he dropped in from another planet.  I've got some details on Mary Morning/Murey - going back to her grandparents who came from Ireland.
