« on: Saturday 13 March 21 18:05 GMT (UK) »
Searching for ancesters of my GGrandfather Michael Brodie and GGrandmother Agnes Cuthbertson. Both were born and died in Campbeltown, and Michael lived at 15 Kirk St. in 1927, when he died. Agnes died in 1902. In particular looking for Michaels father John T. Brodie's ancesters , and Agnes's Grandfather Andrew Cuthbertson.

Any information would be appreciated,

Welcome to RootsChat.

All the information you need is at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk at modest cost.

Michael Brodie and Agnes Cuthbertson were married in Campbeltown in 1872. Their marriage certificate will tell you the names of their parents including their mothers' maiden surnames.

In the index to the 1911 census, Michael Brodie, 59 and Andrew Brodie, 16, are listed in Campbeltown.

In the 1871 census Michell Brodie, 18, fisherman, is with his widowed mother Margaret, who was born in Ireland.

The death of Agnes Cuthbertson or Brodie, aged 47, was registered in Campbeltown in 1901, not 1902.

In the 1861 census Agnes Cuthbertson, 6, is with her parents Andrew Cuthbertson, mother Mary and three siblings. Andrew C and Mary Morins were married in Campbeltown in 1849. In the birth records of her children her surname is indexed as Morens, Marans, Moulin (twice), Morrins and Morrens.

Mary Morrans or Cuthbertson died in Campbeltown in 1902. Andrew Cuthbertson died in Campbeltown in 1909. Their death certificates will tell you the names of their parents including their mothers' maiden surnames.

Noting that there is a fifteen-year-old Mary in the household in 1871, I searched for her birth, and eventually found that it is recorded as Broadly not Brodie.

I couldn't resist taking a look at it.

Mary Broadly was born on 3 February 1855 at Wide Close, Campbeltown. Father John Broadly, labourer, 30, born Rathlin. Mother Margaret Broadly, maiden surname McKerall, aged 29, born County Antrim, and Mary was her 6th child. John and Margaret were married in Campbeltown on 5 June 1843 and they had 2 boys and 2 girls living and 1 boy deceased. The birth was registered by John Campbell, occupant.

“Broadly” was likely “Bradley” on Rathlin. The surname was found in the townland of Ballynagard. 2 farms there in 1834:

They were gone by the time of Griffiths Valuation in 1861. (Rathlin emptied during the 1800s due to over-population, famine etc). The 1803 agricultural census of Rathlin has James Bradley in Ballynagard plus John & Neal Bradley in Church Quarter.
