This Article was in The Manchester Times Newspaper on the 15th June 1889:

‘Serious Accident at a Warehouse’:

A Presser named William J. Wilson, 25yrs, who is in the employment of Messieurs Ralli Brothers, Merchants, Manchester met with a serious accident on Monday.
He was in the act of descending a hoist and fell from the 3rd to the Ground Floor.
1889.

I can’t find any other mentions of this accident, whether he was awarded any compensation, or indeed, find him on the 1881 or 1891 Censuses.

Can anyone on here see anything?

Did he definitely survive? The only article I can see is the one you mentioned - they seem more worried that the hoist was greatly damaged, as that is mentioned before it says he was taken to hospital!

Have you found him in the 1891/1901 censuses?  If the fall wasn’t due to any fault in the machinery he would not receive any compensation

I noticed that too!

I suppose that Workers were replaceable, but machinery was more important to the Company!

There's a marriage of a William James   Wilson aged 20 on the 22nd September 1885 in Manchester to
Mary Jane Unsworth. His occupation was a packer and his father was Charles Wilson, also a packer. The certificate is on FindMyPast. Might be worth looking for that family in 1881 and 1891.

I’ve found William on 1891, 1901 and 1911 census
On 1891 he’s with wife Mary J and children Jane Charles and Albert living at 23 Union Street, Hulme
There’s also another marriage in 1913, let me know if you want all the details

Thanks so much for looking for this man.

There was a slight chance that he might have been my ever elusive Grandfather William James Wilson, born Manchester in 1860.

I can find him definitely on the 1901 and 1911 censuses for Swansea, but he’s nowhere to be found until he married my grandmother Margaret Rees in Swansea in June 1893.

He started a Painting and Decorating Company in Swansea in 1895 with the sum of £36, and I was wondering if that was compensation money... That’s why I was interested in trying to find more on the man who had the work related accident in 1889.
