Middlesbrough newspapers
« on: Thursday 18 February 21 16:15 GMT (UK) »
Hello!

Please can someone tell me the name of the local papers. I'm searching for a possible article about a man who passed in 1979. He was apparently in prison at some point and I'd like to see if I can search for newspaper details.

Thanks in anticipation,

Legs x

The local evening paper is Evening Gazette; for a daily paper you might look at The Northern Echo

Thank you Ruthie. That's brilliant. Do you know if they have online search facilities as I'm a long way away from Middlesbrough!

Thanks again xxx

I've just found that the 'North Eastern Daily Gazette' is available on newpapers.com but only up to the early 1900s (which isn't very helpful - sorry) The Northern Echo is on FindMyPast but that's 1850 - 1949 so that's probably not much use either!

Someone else may know better - I hope so!!

Evening Gazette archives are held at Middlesbrough Reference Library.  I suppose the library will be closed during the pandemic but perhaps you could email them to see if any staff are still working.  "Normally" you can visit and view the newspapers on microfilm.  The EG covers Middlesbrough and the Cleveland/Teesside area.

Email is below, replacing AT with @ and no spaces.

The Northern Echo archives are held at Darlington Local Studies Library.  Again, there may be staff working there and you could email them to see if they would do a lookup for you - if you have a precise date.  Email, AT = @ as before.  The NE covers Darlington, South Durham areas and also Richmond, North Yorkshire area.

local.studies AT darlington.gov.uk

Not sure whether they charge for any lookup/copying services, you will have to query that.

Thank you Tilly, that's fabulous. I live on the south coast so it'll have to be via email pandemic or not.

Thanks again

I have always found the library staff extremely helpful, even via email.

There was also a local paper called the "Stockton and Darlington Times" but I am not sure they are still extant but I know they were in 1979.

If you are sure the person was incarcerated you might try the court records. Just a thought.

Thank you, I must get around to emailing them. I believe the person in question was incarcerated.
