It doesn't "stick" yet; nor does the "Toggle transcript". They apply only to the current viewing of the current image.

At least they listened and better than nothing, I can live with that 🙂

Looks like they've changed it again. For the better!
Now the default seems to be without the film strip. and you can switch it on by clicking "all pages" button in bottom right.

But now, those that want the film strip can easily switch it on, and those that don't want it, don't have to have it by default

But now we have the choice, before all this we depended on the arrows either side when they did not show an option to change page numbers at the bottom of the image.

That's fair enough Rosie. I'm just pleased that I won't be confronted with a two inch strip at the bottom of the screen.

The choice is now available to do what suits you.

I agree Girl Guide, at least we have the choice to opt in to it rather than having to opt out every time.

I see now that having selected the option to view the image without the film underneath we don't have a direct link to the transcript from that page without reopening the 'all pages' or is it just me.

It seems that you can't get back to the transcription page.  You just get taken back to the results page when you click on the arrow at the top left of the image page.

Something to flag up to Find My Past perhaps.  Was that option there before they provided the close all pages button?

You used to be able to select image or transcript which you still can.  Having selected either you could previously 'flip' between the two.
