Well, I have received a reply from them, and found it rather patronising.

"Original images are a cornerstone of family history.
Exploring them can help you uncover rich detail and exciting stories. We’ve improved our record image viewer to help you make more of these exciting discoveries."

  No plans to alter things.

They must have some standard letters prepared. I had two replies but I only sent one complaint. My replies were identical but were from different people on consecutive days!
They were the same as Cathy's ~

"Thank you for your email and feedback regarding our new image viewer.
The option to turn off the information bar (additional images) wasn' t considered critical by members in the testing we did for the first release. We will be looking into this for a future release."

I would be interested to know who their panel of members were and what computers were used to test the new format  :-X

After my initial complaint about viewing the images on FindMyPast the following is the reply I received:

The option to turn off the page navigation tool wasn’t considered critical by members in the testing we did for the first release. We will continue to monitor its usage and any feedback we receive. Your feedback has been passed on to the Product team involved in this feature.

As I asked them in the email I sent why do the bottom images need to be there? Surely just use the next related image arrow. Like Gadget I would be interested to know which members and how many took part in the testing.
Would it not have been better at some point when you logged on to the site they explained what they were considering, then ask do you want to view the image through a letterbox or like to see it on full screen. i know what I would have gone for.
As my dear granny used to say "If it ain't broke don't fix it"

I find the new layout a huge improvement than the old layout and in line with Ancestry and many more modern website which use the filmstrip layout making searching easier if one swaps between the sites.
The filmstrip is useful when searching through baptism register in finding all children of a family.
I admit the screen is best viewed on a desktop but it is possible to swap to full screen to remove many of the addition from the screen.
It is only by instigating such changes that we progress, but then some would still prefer researchers travelled to archives to do their research.

I for one congratulate them for the advances they are bringing to family history research.
Cheers

Guy - I know you have a wider and more technical expertise in searching than I do, so could you explain what you mean by the above? Does it apply when using registers with many entries, so you can skip a page or two to get to the next year? Most of my research is in registers with few entries.

Yes, if you have a family that stayed in one place and had multiple children, chances are they’re baptised in the same church. The film strip is quicker in that instance.
If like a lot of my husbands family that moved around, baptisms can be in different parishes. Making that filmstrip just a darn nuisance that obscures the image.

I agree

I’ve emailed twice, no response as yet.
Seems we’re stuck with it, unless we continue to complain.
They must have some technical bods somewhere tinkering away justifying their wages  ::)

It is also useful on census images just click and change from record images to transcription and you can see what the think the image says whilst showing the image, on he 1939 this is also useful where additions cover part of the name or runs a little under a redaction.
The new style give plenty of options as noted earlier the brightness and contrast controls are good for the black and white census images including those faded pencil pages of the 1841 census. I have no problem changing brightness & contrast etc. in a similar way the zoom in out works fine. It could be because I use Windows 10 and Firefox on a desktop computer rather than other options but it all works fine.
Perhaps those who are having trouble because of what they use to view the pages rather than a problem in the coding. For instance some may have a problem with Internet Explorer, I don't know as I have not used it since the 1990s.
Yes it would be useful if the various options strips could be switched on and off but that may come if enough users request that option.
I am just pleased they are trying to improve what they offer specially as the 1921 is in the offing, the wider the range of records offered the more versatile the site needs to be.
Cheers

Sorry, but I don't understand this either. I have always been able to swap fairly easily between image and transcript, but I cannot now find a way to do it, apart from the back arrow. I use Windows10 and Firefox.
